Automatic fuel scooping

Here's a neat trick for anybody that doesn't know...

You can now automatically refuel while orbiting a fuel star! Here's how...

(You will first need a fuel scoop and the supercruise assist module equipped)

1) Select an appropriate scoopable star from your left hand panel 'navigation' tab.

2) Select the star, and select the second icon from the left (supercruise assist and orbit)

3) Set your throttle to the blue zone and sit back / relax. Your ship will now automatically refuel at a safe distance that doesn't seem to cause any heat damage.

Sure its slower than flying it manual, but you can busy yourself with galnet news or this forum!

I'm sure that'd be great for some players, but it seems very situational. It doesn't suit explorers - who do the most refueling - because you can't use the FSS at the same time as an 'orbit' refuel, let's call it, and explorers can almost always push their ships deep into the coronas for prolonged periods, usually in the time it takes to acquire the next jump vector.

And how often do you need to use the galaxy map whilst refueling in the bubble? People tend to always be going someplace specific, and also rarely need to refuel unless they're in a ship with a tiny fuel tank - which'll usually top-up in the time it takes to acquire the next jump.

I know, I know... I'm being picky, but I'm just trying to think of situations where it'd be especially useful, and I can't really think of any. I suppose the forum/doing-something-not-in-the-game is valid, but in the bubble I'd never want to leave my ship doing its own thang. Get jumped close to a star, and you could have issues getting free and low or high-waking.

It's not that useful, but sometimes I like to take my time refuelling. I used to pull the throttle down to .3c or whatever the minimum is and just sit in the fuel / cool zone. Now I can do that automatically. Sure if you're not on a go-slow it won't help, but I like it when I'm not in a hurry :)

You can also get close enough to start fueling, let it get to your desired scooping speed, then completely decellerate (30km/s in SC). The scoop will fuel at that speed until full. No need to orbit unless you want to get around the star. ;)

Fair enough. I did give your original post a thumbs up anyway, btw, as it's good to make people aware of the option.

It'll also depend on what someone's flying as well as their scoop. I've been testing a 7A recently (on a Corvette for exploration), and that thing's insane - you mostly just need to look in the general direction of a main sequence star and it'll top up...

Ha 7a is gonna be pretty mega.

I've just restarted the game again so that kind of ship and load out is out of my reach for a little while. There's so many new features and missions I felt the need to restart and experience them all as a 'beginner'

I don't use the supercruise assist module but if you simple zero your throttle when you are scooping at a safe distance, you can scoop without gaining heat.

If I lost my progress I'd probably throw my Xbox and HOTAS out the window. ; -) I'm curious to see how the game now feels from the start, with its weirdly locked of systems and apparently improved tutorials/mission guides. But if I do that I'll reset a second account I created just to show someone the game's beginning from a year or two ago (that'd be an Empire loyal character, so I'd get to try out the rank-locked Gutamaya's. any time I consider doing that, I just baulk at the idea of starting out with no funds, no superpower/faction/rank progress, and no fleet... ).

But you're on Xbox you can just create another XBox account and login with that to get another Commander.

Hence why I said this in that post "But if I do that I'll reset a second account I created...". That other account will still be starting from scratch, which - given how long it takes to progress in Elite (especially without rank grinding and goldrushing) - is still a fairly horrible thought.
