Aviary Pack Dreams vs Nightmares Scenarios

Well folks, it is that time again. Now that we know the roster of the North America Animal Pack, we move on to predicting the December addition. I have been increasingly confident this will be an aviary dlc, the only question is what will it look like? Will it be a mere 5 birds and scenery pieces? I think we all hope it would be more substantial than that. I have decided to format this with a maximum of 10 species, and a minimum of 5. Before I tell you mine, I'll look back at the North American edition. I was pretty confident we would get at least one bird, which was ultimately wrong, and that is where the beaver came in. However, I was right in that they themed this pack around many different ecosystems instead of one overlapping one. I got 4 picks right, with the prairie dog being just as likely as the ferret, so 5 altogether. Not great! This one is even more of a cr*pshoot haha, let's see how I do this time!

Dream Scenario
  1. Rainbow lorikeet
  2. Scarlet macaw
  3. Snowy owl
  4. Scarlet ibis
  5. Bald eagle
  6. California condor
  7. Bali mynah
  8. Toco toucan
  9. Kookaburra
  10. Greater hornbill
This list is ordered in which I am most confident about, with the most being at the top. The first two are the only two picks I'm over 95% sure about. Rainbow lorikeets are pretty much the most common walkthrough aviary birds, and I think Frontier would pick the scarlet macaw as the most recognizable macaw species. I'm assuming they will generally pick larger bird species, try to get a good mix of different genus/families and many species from around the world. They will probably prioritize species common in captivity, and species from areas that don't have as much representation in game (South America and Oceania).

Nightmare
  1. Hyacinth macaw
  2. Budgerigar
  3. Trumpeter swan
  4. Guam rail
  5. Secretary bird
My nightmare scenario would be summed up as this: I need more than 5 species, I don't want to see a bunch of ground birds or waterfowl that don't add a new dynamic to the game, and I want bright, colorful species to take the center stage.

Worst scenario to the point that I doubt I'd buy the pack: any 4 birds only

Dream scenario:

1) Scarlet macaw
2) Eurasian eagle owl
3) Bald eagle
4) Toco toucan
5) Laughing Kookaburra
6) Great hornbill
7) Bearded vulture
8) Great white pelican
Bonus
9) Andean condor
10) Rainbow lorikeet

Ten? Okey...I have twelve on my list and three exhibit.
I think the aviary components will be part of the free update. Simply because otherwise they would block the way for more flying birds in future DLCs. Since they can hardly demand "you have to buy this DLC for components"

Okey birds:
1. Bald Eagle - pretty obvious choice.
1632896965903.png

2. Eurasien Eagle Owl - I think, it's the largest owl species.
1632897039838.png

3. A Mawcaw - I prefer the hyacinth mawcaw, because i love the blue colour...but I don't really care about the exact type, they are all pretty
1632897217114.png

4. Scarlet Ibis
1632897243510.png

5. Greater Hornbill - I think its the "greater"? They are really pretty with the black and white and the yellow
1632897261949.png

6. Toucan
1632897349772.png

7. Kookaburra - I Germany we call him "Lachernder Hans - Laughting Hans"
1632897405101.png

8. Bali Myna
1632897476368.png

9. Brown Pelican
1632897567299.png

10. Secretary Bird
1632898082381.png

Nightmare? - no birds would be a nightmare

If I could choose one just for myself, I would like the barn owl. I think it's beautiful and it fascinates me. She is my personal favorite bird.

Nightmare would be:

  1. If we too many of one bird (like, 3 or 4 macaw, then the rest whatever. It'll be a waste of space)
Dream:
  1. Scarlet macaw - my favorite. Too bad they aren't purple
  2. Andean condor - a bird conservation icon
  3. Bald eagle - it would be fun to care for such a powerful animal
  4. Great horned owl - a large bird. I love owls
  5. Victoria crowned pigeon - a nice, grayish-blue color and a crazy 'do
  6. Bird-of-paradise (any) - all are beautiful
  7. Scarlet ibis - a nice red color
  8. Laughing kookaburra - it'll be a shame if we don't get them
  9. Superb lyrebird - the master of mimicry
  10. Resplendent quetzal - I highly doubt this beautiful bird will ever make it, but it's my dream pack, right?

I have zero expectations around an aviary pack (I'm not willing to bet on anything here, even the existence of such a pack). I hope nobody gets their hopes up and is ultimately disappointed in December.

That said, the most likely scenario, I think, is eight birds, with the free update including a modular aviary-building system that can also be used for existing in-game animals (such as primates, cats, or whatever). Of the eight birds, who knows?

- A macaw.
- An eagle.
- A vulture.
- A cockatoo.
- A toucan or hornbill.
- Three other random picks, possibly a pelican since that's highly-requested now, or the puffin.

If we do get a bird pack, I am hoping that they will only include birds that are normally only kept in aviaries. As much as I'm advocating for a pelican in the game, I'd rather not see it take the spot of an aviary bird. That being said, my list would be (from top to bottom):
  • Andean condor/Bald Eagle
  • Blue-and-Yellow Macaw/Scarlet Macaw/Hyacinth Macaw
  • Great Indian Hornbill
  • Toco Toucan
  • Griffon Vulture/King Vulture/Turkey Vulture
  • Palm Cockatoo/Sulphur-crested Cockatoo/Galah
  • Eurasian Eagle Owl/Snowy Owl

That is assuming we get 7. If they do 10, my additional choices would be:
  • Harpey Eagle/Brahminy Kite
  • Great Bird-of-Paradise
  • Blue-winged Kookaburra/Bali Mynah

Bald Eagle
Toco Toucan
Any Owl
Scarlet Macaw
Rainbow lorikeet
Greater Hornbill
A pelican
Kookabura
California Condor
Secretary Bird or bird of paradise

Honestly hope we get more to get a bat some storks and hopefully a harpy Eagle and more parrots

Dream pack 20 birds:
  • Shoebill
  • Pelican
  • Toucan
  • Hornbill
  • Argus
  • Gray crowned crane
  • Secretary bird
  • Any eagle
  • Any vulture
  • Any owl
  • Any macaw
  • Any cockatoo
  • Any goose or swan
  • Any touraco
  • Any stork
  • Victoria pigeon
  • Kookaburra
  • Roseate spoonbill
  • Scarlet ibis
  • Bali mynah
Nightmare:

Less than 10 birds in a pack

I have no expectations whatsoever but I feel somewhat confident in predicting that a birds/aviary pack is coming next.

Dream scenario
08AC33B6-D843-4A01-9C97-0F2AD6D99299.jpeg

A large (+10) number of birds including ground birds like emu and kiwi. Maximum flexibility with building aviaries which can also house cats, primates etc instead of birds if you wish.

Nightmare scenario
DCB08CAA-42F8-4A61-9DC1-0954295859FE.jpeg

Only four birds, very limited aviary possibilities where birds can only be housed in specific, limited ways and building freedom is limited. California condor over Andean condor.

I have partly based my choices on the videos of the flying animals for JWE2 - both the species shown so far (the Dimorphodon and Pteranodon) are shown with a leisurely, meandering flight pattern. The birds I have chosen all share pretty strong and agile flight capabilities, with those that have shorter, very direct flights (such as toucans, songbirds and kookaburras) not on my list. Although I would love to see them, if they came flying in the manner of the JWE2 pterosaurs I would be disappointed.

These are not in any real order of preference (pictures for those species not pictured so far and not obviously recognisable):
1) Scarlet macaw - Really, the type of macaw is rather interchangeable but this is probably the most recognisable species; they would probably be the face of an aviary pack.

2) Bald eagle - Again, any northern eagle (like a white-tailed sea, Steller's sea or golden eagle) would work here, but again the bald eagle is likely most recognisable; they also have the advantage of being found in a larger number of biomes than most other eagles.

3) Rhinoceros hornbill - My local zoo had these until fairly recently, which is why I've chosen them above the great hornbill; they are an ideal flagship species for Southeast Asian birds and have been kept in walkthrough aviaries.
1632954308787.png

4) Snowy owl - I wanted at least one tundra bird and this is really the best option. As well as being recognisable and charismatic, they are actually kept in walkthrough aviaries in a few places.

5) Rainbow lorikeet - This would add a smaller parrot species which is exceptionally colourful and one of the more charismatic Australian birds; they are also, as mentioned earlier, one of the most common birds for a walkthrough aviary.

6) Secretary bird - A bird that mainly uses the ground but also has the need for flight would be excellent; this species fits the bill nicely as they nest in tall trees - they can be kept in mixed enclosures both with large mammals and other birds and also live in walkthrough aviaries.

7) Northern bald ibis - Has a really impressive conservation history with zoos that would represent a species that is found in North Africa, the Middle East and southern Europe.
1632954093955.png

8) Inca tern - A more out-there choice, but it is by far the most commonly kept flying seabird in zoos that is often kept in mixed enclosures with penguins; these South American birds also have that charismatic feather moustache.
1632954110221.png

9) Lilac breasted roller - Another less-requested species but this is one of the most photogenic of Africa's birds; they would be a good species of smaller bird for the game - extra points if they can land on the backs of other animals.
1632954123476.png

10) Greater bulldog bat - I really would like to see a bat. While I was tempted by a fruit bat, I am really taken by these fish-catching bats from Central and South America; they would make a good little section with the giant otter and dwarf caiman, could use a similar feeding strategy to the terns, are bright orange in colour, have a metre wingspan (much bigger than many other microbats) and at least 39 individuals of this species are kept in at least two American zoos, so they would work in terms of them having a captive presence.

My nightmare scenario is pretty much just four birds. Doesn't matter what the four are, but it would be a bit cruel to be given free flight and then have only four animals use it.

I'm pretty sure it'll be a 4 bird pack with an exhibit...I'd see it as something a lot like the Aquatic Pack in format.

My dream scenario is that it's an animal pack, possibly with a bonus bird as a freebie with the update that adds the aviary structure stuff on that side. The bonus one being one to add a use of the aviaries for existing players.

My nightmare scenario is the 4 birds that are very similar to each other

I don’t think there is a nightmare scenario in this one. Just because the game is so desperate for more birds. I do agree the pack if seven or so should definitely contain 4-5 flying species. A pelican or Secretary bird is always welcome tho. I also think as long as we get continued support it opens up a chance for more birds in other dlc packs as well.

I could also see it as entirely smaller birds for the initial pack rather than the larger ones. I'd assume that we'd get a couple that are "safe" for a walk through aviary if not all of them with a cohabitation option for it. Then add the larger birds to the game with later packs where you already have a lot of options to start with.

Unfortunately, I can see a LOT of the larger birds getting into a polar bear situation with requirements that are rather crazy, and while they would look cool, I think it would be more fun to have less of a size requirement for the new mechanic to work.

What an interesting take on the thread. I agree I think it's likely the next DLC may end up being avians - like the aquatic pack it will bring a new level of species to the game for end of year.

I doubt this will happen but dream pack really is 12-16 birds, but to keep with the 10...that's so difficult but....

Bald Eagle
North American Pelican of some species (I definitely want one!)
Scarlet Macaw
Hyacinth Macaw
Toco Toucan
Scarlet Ibis
Kookaburra
Rhinoceros Hornbill
Secretary Bird
Shoebill Stork
(wishes I could sneak another couple in there but I do think these would be my top 10)

Anyways...Nightmare list
It being 5 animals or less.

Toco Toucan. Because if there's an avian pack, there is no way they're not going to make it in.
Barn Owl - I love owls but I think the Barn Owls are just a bit too plain looking. Sorry to single them out.
Umm...birds that are very similar to one another that are not parrots/macaws (I love them and I don't mind getting variants)
Geese. Geese are spiteful creatures and will run after you and try to bite you and your dog for walking in "their" park - that might be a personal anecdote.

There's really not a lot of birds I'd be unhappy with, just more ones that I would be happy with.

Nightmare would be:

  1. If we too many of one bird (like, 3 or 4 macaw, then the rest whatever. It'll be a waste of space)
This would only be a nightmare if we dont get enough diverse species, but i wouldnt mind getting something like 4 eagles, 4 macaws, 4 owls and 4 vultures in a big expansion, where they cut corners on the cost by using similar animals to make more of them.

You've done well with predicting the next DLC pack for these threads thus far TC, I think you're at 3 for 3? But I can't help but imagine this is where the streak ends. I'm not saying aviaries won't happen, but I'm personally very apprehensive about how confident people seem to be about them.
I mean, the closest thing to "evidence" we had towards them in my eyes got thoroughly blown out and tucked his tail and ran away following last week's DLC reveal......

ANYWAY

Aviary Pack Dream Roster
  1. Bald eagle. No way around it. Personally I'm very "whatever" towards bald eagles, but I do not want to live in a world where they don't get included and I have to see other Americans taking their omission as a personal offense (probably not on this forum, I'd assume, but I can see the Reddit threads and Steam comments already).
  2. Barn owl. Not everyone's top owl choice from what I've seen, but I just really like the looks of them. They're so simultaneously cute and creepy! Also if it's included without designating a subspecies, it could be used to represent an absolutely massive range of continents and biomes. All owls are great, though. Ideally I'd take these guys first, snowy owl second, and then a horned owl third.
  3. Scarlet macaw. Not my favorite macaw, but certainly the "default" one in my eyes, so it'd feel a bit odd to not get it first. Ideally, though, I'd love to see multiple 100% recolor macaws included. I don't care if they're clones in every meaningful way, I just want my colorful birds to be colorful. Blue-and-gold, hyacinth, and military would be my picks, but I certainly wouldn't want to include them at the expense of more unique species.
  4. Toco toucan. I don't even have much to say about these next few, but they're all iconic and distinct and would be very, very welcome additions.
  5. Bali myna.
  6. Laughing kookaburra.
  7. Rainbow lorikeet.
  8. Rüppell's griffon vulture.
  9. Scarlet ibis.
  10. Red-tailed hawk. My bias pick. I'm a huge Animorphs fan to this day, so I absolutely have to include this one.
A brief, non-comprehensive list of runners-up without additional commentary: great hornbill, Eurasian eagle owl, snowy owl, budgerigar, sulphur-crested cockatoo, grey crowned crane, secretary bird, tawny frogmouth, Nicobar pigeon, Victoria crowned pigeon, whooping crane, red crowned crane, brown pelican. Honestly there's very few wrong answers here.

Aviary Pack Nightmare Roster
  1. Golden eagle. Most of my Nightmare Rosters have consisted of "close but no cigar" type picks. The banded mongoose and elk (wapiti) are fine animals on their own, but they would do nothing to scratch the itch presented by the meerkat or moose. Similarly, this would end up being just "close enough" to the bald eagle to certainly upset some people while doing nothing to sate the actual demand for the bald eagle.
  2. Emu. While the emu is actually one of my most wanted animals, if they're gonna do an aviary pack, they better do it right! No birds that could've unambiguously worked as a habitat animal that you'd never realistically see inside a fully enclosed aviary setup.
  3. A bat. Nothing against bats! They're really cool, and I think it'd be neat to have at least one before support ends. But I don't think that an aviary pack is actually the place for them. My ideal aviary pack would get as many birds as possible into our hands all at once, and every non-bird included is a bird that could have been.
  4. Marabou stork. The single bird that passes the "too ugly" threshold. Nope, no thanks.
  5. Ring-beaked gull. hahaha could you imagine

Dream scenario:

a raptor pack for starters with 8 eagles, vultures and relatives.
Followed in the future with more packs between regular packs that fill in different aviary niches, like tropical, coastal, wetlands...

Nightmare scenario:
4 birds.

A birds only pack is my own personal nightmare :D But as I said, if it helps the game and makes the community happy, I'll keep my mouth shut about it, as soon as it is announced.

My dream scenario would include small monkey species that can be kept in an aviary included in a bird heavy pack.

For me it's the same, since i'm not into birds so much, so it's not gonna be a full-hype Christmas train, at the end birds are part of a zoo, so fair enough, buy the pack and move on.
Speaking as a birds noob i would like to see at least:
  • One or more Parrot species
  • Toco Toucan
  • Eagle (Bald and Golden)
  • Eurasian Owl
  • Peregrine Falcon
  • Vulture (Andean Condor, Cape Vulture and Bearded Vulture)
  • Secretary Bird (Zt2 nostalgia)
  • Black Crowned Crane
Other than that i will just leave the rest to Frontier to make a really big pack full of birds, right Frontier? Right?
