So I got Horizons installed finally, took far less time than I expected, and loaded up the game. Looked good, ran exactly as it did before, and I checked the planetary settings to see what they defaulted to, all ultra as I expect to get. Couldn't find a SRV hanger, figured I'll just go buzz a planet until I can find one, see what it's like to zip around canyons in a Python, right?
Wrong! I noticed, as I'm not able to actually approach a planet, that I'm showing 1.5 in the bottom left...what the hell? I KNOW I clicked on the 64 bit, huh...check options, yes, SRV controls and planetary settings are all here, musta done something wrong.
Exit game, check Launcher, showing 32, 64 and Training and that's it, nothing else shows, nothing moves, figure it must be a bug and get ready to submit a ticket. Just because, I click on the 64 and hit the up arrow and..hey, look at that! IT MOVES THIS TIME! HORIZONS!
So, I hit Play and I'm back where I was, head for the nearest moon with a base with Outfitting on it and hit the FSD.
Wow, the flight down was amazing, bit of a pause there when exiting Orbital, but I'm sure that's likely due to the server traffic, hyperspace was a bit slow as well. Get out of glide and start my approach, realize I'm on the wrong side of the moon and I'm very thankful I watched the Horizons videos, knew to get my att into the blue and get max speed around the moon, get within 100km in nothing flat. Decide to come down short and zip around a bit, some nice canyons here, and I'm glad I did. That was so much fun!
Get the settlement, land, get a SRV hanger and take off! 3 hours later I notice my drink is empty, and I glance at the time and realize, it's been 3 hours! I haven't gotten more than a few kilometers away from the settlement but I've driver well over 20km and been having a blast. Found multiple materials, beat my little buggy up a bit bouncing around and doing jumps, and spent some time just sitting there watching ships fly overhead from and to the settlement.
In space, my fps are what they've always been, 90-120, but when I get close to a planet, they drop, a lot, and I was expecting that. I'm running a GTX 750 2g, NOT a Ti, just a plain jane 750, so I figured I would get some serious fps hits at ultra settings on the surface, and I do, 20-40 range. I'm not complaining, far from it, I'm happy it runs THAT well, considering all the reports of it not getting THAT good for many with better cards! And it looks awesome on ultra, I could turn some stuff down and get better fps, but I'm comfortable where they are, it only gets annoying when I'm on a menu oddly enough, smooth enough that if I hadn't hit Ctrl F I wouldn't have realized how low they were dropping. Busy areas, 20 to 30, out in the open 30 to 40. I'm glad to know that the PC I'm getting my grandson to play Horizons on will be capable of playing the game nicely, and it plays well enough on my system that I won't be suffering until I can get around to upgrading my own vidcard.
Did a few missions, dealt with some NPCs, had fun and got to land and drive an SRV around and totally lost track of time doing NOTHING but donuts and jumps, thank you FD and David Braben!
