Back From a Long Intermission

Hello Commanders,
I played Beta 2 through slightly after the first release. I did alright in the Betas, and got an Anaconda through trading back when it was only around 7 million. I've read every newsletter that has come out since #57, and lurked in the forums too. I want to get back into the game, but after logging in I realize I left off in my beta backer Freagle.
I have some knowledge of what's come out since I left but I don't know what to do in regards to making money or any of this Powerplay stuff. Sadly I missed out on the lifetime season pass and I haven't bought Horizons yet. I was wondering if any Cmdrs would be willing to summarize how the game has changed, how to be successful, or just share some tips.
Cheers guys.

Game hasn't changed much, tbh. Powerplay essentially rewards you with a weekly salary and access to unique versions of existing modules, smuggling is viable, and combat zones / resource extraction sites are more viable, but aside from that -- and a few new ships and modules, and of course Horizons -- very little has changed since the game's early release.

Oh, I should mention that chat functions are better and can be used to speak to other players across a system, and that players can form private groups (wings) to play together, but I tend to play solo for various reasons.

Thanks Commander. And would you recommend Horizons for it's $50 pricetag?
