Back in Time - Predicting The Engineers!

Came across this ancient newsgroup! Earliest discussions spanning '94. One thing caught my eye : Elite Elite Elite everywhere: Starting from the very FIRST post ! But here' s something that caught my eye and made me smile (and feel sad at the same time) Have we waited 22 years for The Engineers?

(edit : some earlier discussions around Doom and how its graphics were gorgeous
but the game was dumb etc etc)

However, even better, would be Elite crossed with Doom, ie you can, on landing at
a space station, actually walk around in it, conversing with characters rather than
via a Frontier-style interface. Of course, this would allow Aliens-style missions
to destroy planets/stations. It's only a question of time I guess until we get
an entire Universe 1st person sim
!

The question is which will be first? Will ED have had the requisite seasons to achieve this before Star Citizen has a releasable product?

Only time will tell.

Oh no you didn't :D

Yeah fair play. My suspicion is that SC will have the more realised station-walky-talky etc, given they've got some core aspects visibly up and running and getting stress tested. (ED almost certainly have stuff in the works to dove-tail with the end of Season 2, but doubt it's at the same stage currently). They'll also probably be able to do more bombastic scripted missions re fixed planetary bases etc, and their FPS approach seems to be more on the Aliens end of things.

But like you say it's a question of release date for SC, and whether it's a rushed one or a polished one. One thing they won't be, and aren't aiming to be, is a 'universe sim', but it'll be interesting to see how many systems they can launch with to give the impression of scale, and how much will follow post-launch.

But ultimately, it doesn't really matter :). There's something in the vibe and aims of Elite that makes me prefer it, but I'll almost certainly try SC out too. If anything I hope they keep their contrasting styles and takes on similar content. (IE it's all cool that SC are going with an Arma style FPS in space aspect, for example, and I hope FD can find their own distinct take on EVAs, mag-boots & zero-grav combat too :))

how far we've come! Back in 94 they were discussing Doom vs Elite!
(Taking a cue from the '94 newsgroup : To you reading this in 2045 - please don't smirk at our discussions on "gorgeous" elite and star citizen graphics! )
