Back up plans

I see a lot of talk about "back up plans", keeping a T6 or a Cobra or such when upgrading to an Asp or T7 or such.

Why?

I'm assuming that a "back up plan" is to avoid being without anything in the event of a disaster where you lose your ship....but have no insurance.

Yet, I'm guessing that the stored ship (the "back up plan") is always at least equal to the insurance costs that you didn't have when your ship blew up?

So is there something else to this idea? What am I missing?

a couple of things, if the credits are invested in the ship you can't accidentally spend them on upgrades or cargo and if you take a mission that involves delivering a message or obtaining cargo then get there to find you can't land because its an outpost you can still complete the mission in one of your smaller ships, this avoids a reputation hit and fines.

It is like a savings account, I may be more willing to spend the cash if it's directly in my account. I've been in situations where I have done uninsured trade runs in a brand new Type-7 & Clipper, all my money was spent on buying the ship, only enough for cargo or insurance. Kinda stupid and risky, but the profits where huge.

If anything went wrong, I knew I had a couple of mill tied up in others ships. That would at least get me back on my feet.

Is the message not sticked to the ship?

I did not tried it but would have guessed as we e.g. also loose bounty vouchers along with a ship destruction.

Might also be security from bugs. IIRC someone saw a bug where they couldn't rebuy even though they had enough credits. You'd hope support would refund you in that case but a second ship would give you something more effective to play with while you wait.
