My friend who is new to the game found a crashed nav beacon 700lys from sol and started to think maybe he had stumbled onto a secret. So i made this backstory for him, and you might like to use it too.
Probe backstory: In 3201 the Empire was locked in a civil war with a group of ungrateful rebels who did not agree with the Emperors enlightened rule. Probes were sent out all over the galaxy to find the rebels secret base which was said to be hidden on an ice moon.
You have found one of these crashed probes and have scanned it for the data that it contains which you can hand in at an Empire base and receive payment.
Happy end to the story is that the rebels were defeated when their leader had his hands chopped off and then fell down a service well on a space station.
