Bad lag firing multicannons in 3.3

I recently started playing again for the first time since 3.1. I've noticed my performance has taken a minor overall hit probably because of the new lighting system, but there's one place where there's major lag that badly affects gameplay: I have a ship with four multicannons engineered with various effects, and firing those multicannons in a CZ brings about severe stuttering along with grey flashes/tracking loss. I don't have this problem when firing weapons with a lower rate of fire (rails, PAs, lasers).

I've tried reducing various settings like HMD image quality, supersampling, anti-aliasing, shadow quality, and draw distance. As expected this reduces visual quality and increases framerate overall across the game, but the lag firing multicannons remains even when performance everywhere else is fine.

Has anyone else run into weapon-related lag issues and know of a specific setting tweak that can improve it? I'm really hoping there's some specific setting that can turn off whatever's happening with weapons (is every single projectile a lighting source in 3.3?) without sacrificing visual quality of the cockpit HUD and ships/stations/planets too much.
