Balance for non Horizon/Engineers players

Just been reading the thread on the engineers expansion with the ability to improve the capabilities of various modules/weapons. Using Horizons cmdrs can already create ammo whilst mid-fight (it's happened against me already and I lost the fight against an effectively unlimited rail gun).

Now my machine (PC) can't run Horizons/Engineers - am I always going to be at a disadvantage to owners of these expansions?

In the name of 'Balance' do you think that FD should allow cmdrs to able to access these features in a different manner?

Discuss.

(and no I can't upgrade my machine as I'm pushing my luck with home life with as much as I play and have spent over the last year+)

Yes, we will have an advantage. No, people who didnt pay for it shouldn't get the gameplay in another way. Inevitably Vanilla cmdrs will get more and more left behind as the months and years pass. Sorry.

so very much as in rather standard MMO's with expansions. At this point it's going to be interestign how mny commanders will then follow or keep with elite. That cna be a ratehr suicidal decision.

I suppose it depends how you play. If you tend to stick with PvE it may not be that noticeable (at first). If you tend towards PvP you're probably going to be at a real disadvantage

Just to clarify, your asking that players that pay more for a game (whether through initial investment or purchasing expansions) should be always be balanced with those who just purchase the basic game?

As with all things, gaming is an evolution you will from time to time have to upgrade your PC/console/whatever...

To be fair, this game was advertised as being cross platform (PC & Mac), and look how that turned out.
I know the OP is not talking about Mac, but an older PC, however my point about the aggressive advertising of this game stands.

Back in September the plan was:

Hello Commanders!

Just to let you folk know: the plan for loot is for it to be a core system update (all seasons), so everyone will be able to use loot.

However, there will be a bunch of loot content that is season 2 (Horizons) only.

Hope this info helps.

Core gamers will be getting access it seems :)

Those CMDRs who want to keep with Elite will want to be able to land on planets anyway. People who stay with this unique space sim will want to enjoy the whole package. So I see no problem at all.
And do not forget that those who cannot afford it now will be able to buy Horizons with a discount later. Eventually all Elite fans will own the expansions.

Yes that is what the OP is asking for. If you want to argue in favour of paying more for a game = get an ingame advantage, feel free to do so. That particular pandora's box goes by the name pay-to-win. ;)

I still have a tiny bit of hope left that engineers won't provide unmitigated upgrades, but sidegrades with true* advantage vs downside tradeoffs.

*True as in the advantage actually competes with the disadvantage, and with an efficiency <= 1. For example, 10% more damage per shot but the gun weights 0.5 tons more is not a true tradeoff, it's a no-brainer upgrade anyone would take any day. 10% more damage per shot for 5% more heat output, while the damage output competes with the heat, it gains in damage and damage-per-heat efficiency, again making it a no-brainer upgrade. The current weapons tend to follow a similar philosophy, a beam laser has higher dps but lower dpe efficiency and higher heat output to compensate.

I dare to suggest a level playing field, yes. The same functionality (planetary landings etc) then no.

Maybe someway to pirate certain required elements for synthesising that all cmdrs have access to?

I know the chances of it happening are remote and I don't intend to stop playing. I play in Open doing PP, I fight for the Kumo Crew and 90% of the time I fight as a solo cmdr - I am already at a disadvantage but this is my choice. Ultimately one more disadvantage can be overcome.

Its as unique as any other game but not truly unique at all. Thats was a very fanboyish sentence.

[/quote] what makes you think that buying an expension is a matter of being able to afford it or not?

Actually, the devs vaguely mentioned vanilla cmdrs 'would have a way to gain materials', but as engineers are on planets...
