Balls to it

Don't think explorers setting out in December was prepared for the NPC's in June...

looks like he wasnt prepared for npcs back then either. im just saying there is a pattern. saving on sth like a point defense to save 0.5 tons on a ship that weighs in at more than 300t to get that 0.02 or so extra range ...
most explorers never go anywhere where a range of 30+ly is even needed. yes of course it hurts when you get downed on return but thats because you ripped your ship off every possibility to defend itself and withstand an attack.

i got interdicted lots of time and my shields and point defense did their job so i could get away with 0 hull damage. still my asp runns 29ly and got me all the way to beagle point.
maybe its just time to stop the stripping down of exploration ships to their bones. the extra range doesnt seem to help when it comes down to interdiction.

It's a fair point but pre 2.1 missiles were less than useless even against hull. Do you pack an ECM module in the hopes it may suddenly be useful after 2.2?
Haha yes you have a valid point about crippling the ship for every last bit of range but arguing about point-defence is shooting your arguement in the foot a bit here ;)

Indeed the OP wasn't and if you check their post history (am I the only one that does that?) they well knew the risk of losing lots of data by accident or otherwise long before they set off in a slow and minimally protected ship.

I've been in two minds about posting, because I didn't want to add to the negativity, but it seems very disingenuous to me. :(

I'm alive and at my last station and can rebuy my ship so, how does this work...escape pod and rescued ? Is there really not enough room in my escape pod to fit a black box with all my exploration data...or at least 50% of it ?

Data is data. Theoretically if an escape pod has tech to help a human survive why shouldn't it be able to carry your data with you?

That actually sounds like a great idea!

As for pilots self-destructing to protect stored data you can code the game to prevent that exploit.

Self destruct in movies etc is often used to stop tech getting into the hands of others. Shouldn't be hard to add "warning, self destruct will also destroy all scan data"

But how would guard against suicide by "accidentally" face planting a planet?
