Seen on the homepage of ED. How you interpret "we'll be back in the New Year with a bang!" ?
Well the launch of Elite: Dangerous will definitely be a big bang!
I guess that means tons of rapid builds released, probably more than once in a week
Beta not too far away?

Noticed this as well and assumed it meant that Frontier will have something nice for us when they return, or perhaps a regular Alpha build schedule
I don't think it will be any way or form regular. They will just keep adding features to alpha builds from ready to deploy branches. They will keep add things until game's engine will be complete (with several test systems to go between) and first beta will start.
Beta is a while off. It won't happen until all the various aspects of the game have been through alpha testing (individually or integrated, as FD see fit) and then there's been at least one alpha test of a full "complete" game. You drop a beta once you think you've got a sort-of finished game but with rough edges that needs polish and stress testing. Alpha is when stuff's broken and outright missing entirely.
I suppose FD could be really non-traditional and release small beta builds containing integrations of whatever's been alpha tested so far, concurrently with alpha releases of new functionality. But I'd be surprised if this happens.
Alpha currently has barely any of the core game, single player self contained dogfights is all, really. They're fun, but a really small portion of the overall game. Off the top of my head we also need - multiplayer and the "grouping" system, trade, missions, ratings, docking, hyperspace, fast in-system travel, other ships and equipping ships, creating commanders, criminality, bounties and police responses... and anything else I've forgotten.
Tonnes of alpha testing left to do yet, we've barely scratched the surface - sorry!

i'm an alpha backer..... i would not be angry, though i am sure that there may be others who would.
If FD came out with a beta in January that has all the required bits of the game, and they all worked sweetly with nothing I thought "I wish they'd gone through alpha with that so I could've provided feedback when it was still possible for them to change things"... then I'd be very happy, not angry. It'd mean the full release coming sooner, and that's a good thing, right?
I'll be shocked if that happens though! No comment on FD, but it's just software development, isn't it? Stuff's never perfect first time, or second for that matter.
yes, it would be a good thing. will it happen? i doubt it.
the beta will come when fd consider it ready. i, for one, trust their judgement.
My speculation next big alpha update will be multiplayer. Together with combat test it will be first part of the test. After that adding in-system travel, several stations, docking and trading. After completing this they will add finished configurations and fixes in bigger beta test which will have bunch of systems where tests will be played out.

Patrick. The title of the this thread, "Bang !", might possibly intimidate, or frighten a user as it summons imagery of weapons- which, as we all know, kill people. Someone might read the thread and truly fear for their life after having seen the title.
We take these things very seriously in the USA. I have contacted Homeland Security to report this terroristic threat to the proper authorities.
They should be at your door in 3....2....1 !!!! BANG !
