Banging my head against a brick wall....

Well I am one of the new Rift owners since the big price drop. In every way it has been a relatively straightforward and really fun fun thing. I have an i7 with a 1080 and enough RAM.

However, getting ED sorted out has been a bit of a trial....

I've owned Elite Dangerous for a while but never really got into it. I have a computer with a small SSD boot drive, and a much bigger mechanical drive. I tried several times to install it on the D drive, as it took too much room up on the system drive. However, despite following lots of forum advice, nothing worked. In the end I got an Oculus key, which allowed me to install the ED on drive D:

Then, when starting up the program, the audio dropped out after about 5 seconds. Lots of googling later, I eventually had to change the device audio on the Rift to CD quality, and set the Oculus software to use the default Windows device.

Then I can't get anywhere on the menus - nothing can be moved/selected. I eventually discovered that this was because when starting ED from oculus front end, it wasn't the application that was currently 'in focus' in Windows. This took some figuring out, because the other thing is that the Xbox controller wasn't working. Or at least the button that takes you back to the Oculus menu was, but nothing works in ED.

So I start using the keyboard, and decide to watch some of the training videos before doing the training missions. However, I seem to only be able to hear the audio on the training missions, there is not picture. There is an area marked 'comms' which I assume should have the picture, but there is nothing in it.

I gave up on that too.

I currently have two issues, that I would be so grateful if anyone can help.

- What is the issues with the training videos not showing a picture ?

- I have googled about the Xbox controllers not working but whilst there have been issues, the posts were fairly old. Is there something that needs to be turned on to enable the xbox controller in the options menu ? - I can't find it if there is. Or is there something else - have Microsoft broken the driver yet again ?

I do have a Thrustmaster Hotas in the cupboard, but I am loathe to make things even more complicated.

Got to say, I tried to run the docking tutorial and it is stunning - the sense of being there is incredible, but by God, it has been very difficult and frustrating.

Any help you can give would be gratefully received.

Cheers Guys.

Well, after giving it all up as a bad job, I went back to it this morning and the Xbox controller is now working perfectly.

Now I'm starting t play the game in VR, and all is can say is - WOW ! The sense of being there is phenomenal. I think this is the gaming experience I've always wanted since the days of the original Wing Commander.

Now to figure out how to learn all the ket bindings......

Hi there,

Re the videos, I have just tried them and they do not work in the Rift, they are weblinks which open in a browser on your desktop which is why you can hear them and not see them.

I don't know about the x-box controller as I use a HOTAS, but have you checked the mappings via the options-controls menu?

Regards

- Did you installed the batteries (correctly) into the controller?
- Is the USB receiver of the Xbox One Wireless Controller plugged into a USB port and paired to the controller?
- Is the controller in the windows device manager listed under Human Interface Devices?
- Is the center (X) button silver or white illuminated? If silver: turn on your controller by pressing the button...
- Is the controller recognized by the Oculus Rift software?

Once you have mapped and learned your hotas you will be good to go. And yes the focus story is head hurting till you figure it out

Thanks for the reply - it's working now, but previously it was working with all programs except for ED. So I could be in ED and then press the illuminated button and it would take me back to the oculus home screen. but no other button would work. Turned it all back on this morning and bingo.

Tell you what thought - an awful lot of aggravation could have been avoided by just a quick readme file that pops up when you first run the game - letting you two some of these not so obvious things.

Anyway - I'm well on my way now - the only problem now is that my wife is getting a bit cheesed off with me up in the loft shooting at things.....
