Base attack missions - what am I doing wrong?

So I used to do the mickey mouse ones with like single + security and 100,000 rewards with just the SRV and they were sometimes challenging.

Since then I have tried a few harder ones, I mean ones that are rated Novice or Competent and got my SRV handed to me in bits with constant swarms of turrets and skimmers.

So I did a bit of research, fitted my FDL with missile launchers and my 4A engineered multi-cannon. G5 thermal shields, 2xG4 pulse lasers etc.

Picked up a Competent mission with a +++ base, 1.3 mil reward. Tried to hit the air defenses with missiles. Nothing hit. Tried repeatedly but a single pass and they took out my sheilds. A few sheild cells later I came back in for a pass and tried again in vane to hit the turrets. I ended up getting stuck between two buildings and losing the ship.

Paid my rebuy, my fines and made my way back from the criminal correction facilities. Tried again, but after 2 passes and my sheilds gone again 2 fed navy ships showed up and started shooting at me. Barely got out alive. I did consider killing them as I was angry, but my last spell in the noteriety sin bin was long enough.

Is it just me or are these far, far too highly pitched? A near-fully engineered FDL has it's back side handed to it and that's even before the feds join the party.

How are you actually meant to do these missions?

Most of the base assault missions you are only suppose to destroy the small generator in the center usually

This one had 4 generators, I tried hitting them with missiles on one pass, but they didn't die. I was pumping over a dozen, fairly well aimed missiles into things on each pass and nothing died.

When I previously tried these with just the SRV, as soon as I entered the tresspass zone I had to deal with several defense turrets and constant waves of skimmers. I spent an hour one night trying to do one and ended up giving up as my SRV was down to 5% hull.

So far, aside the really basic missions I have not successfully completed one of these, but have abandoned about 4 of them after trying different tactics.

The generators are easily destroyed from srv shoot the side that has the bright lights the control panelish looking thing.

From my (admitedly poor) experience I had to slowly destroy practically all defences, turrets and skimmers.... Helps if you synth both SRV hull and ammo. I also waited for the ship that was flying around to leave. Usually you have a minute or three without air support.

These missions are fun to try out but money is not.worth it and legal problems are a pain.

It may be that as they are designed to be completed in your SRV that elements have been adjusted. Would need to test.

These are the easiest missions there are, performed correctly.

  • Position your ship ~10km directly above the base.
  • Point straight down at base and approach slowly until you pick up the generator.
  • Destroy Generator. I do it with a single volley of twin Rails.
  • Boost away.

Half the time I'm FSD charging by the time I even start receiving fire, often don't take a single hit. Attacking from any angle but directly above and coming down is terribad tactics and asking for problems. I've been waiting for these missions to get fixed to not be so incredibly easy.

I've found that base defenses succumb pretty quickly to multi-cannons. Even SR MCs can usually take any defenses out long before they're much of a threat to you...

This one had 4 generators

Your interpretation will be slightly off there. Was probably an emplacement generator as the target, and any valid target will highlight, even if you only need to destroy one.

My tactic is 4 pips to sys, dive bomb target and let off missile at point blank, then leg it.

What you were doing wrong is assuming you can play it however you see fit, blazing your own trail.

There's usually only one correct way of doing everything in ED, in this case you're meant to infiltrate with a buggy, so that blasting the base up with ship's weaponry is not possible.

On one hand I can understand the logic, on the other - meh...

Remember the skimmer runs and the suicidewinders!

You do not need to get out of the ship.

Weapon choice is easy, go frags, cos you can run pips 4-1-1 and still fire as much as you like, plus they destroy all the things in zero time.

As you approach and get the 'entering trespass zone' warning, look at the left panel (contacts) for the contacts that you have to destroy. They will be targetable, like generators, or turrets or whatever. Power generators are the easiest as they only take a single hit, just don't shoot at the orange side of them (it's invulnerable, shoot the dark side with flashy bits), then move on to the turrets if you have any to take out. Get nose to nose with anything you have to destroy and spam the frags, it will just pop.

That's it. Use the left panel to pick your targets, get close and kill them fast, boost away, profit?

Trespassing is completely stupid with c&p.

Also, new user experience and srv infiltration tutorial are a testimony of how broken those missions are.

This game wanted to provide base infiltration and all that's left is a brute forced exploit.

I guess if Deus Ex was sold as a service twenty years ago we would never have heard of missions with multiple ways to solve them as they would have been too busy with their in-game shops and risk based roadmaps.

Are we playing the same game? True there might be the way you were *intended* to solve a mission problem. Then there's usually a better, more efficient, way!

I tried staying in the buggy, but on the higher level missions there are just too many skimmers galieths, turrets etc. etc. I was trying to sneak shots round corners, running away waiting on shields recharging. I honestly shot about 12 skimmers down, but they kept coming and eventually the buggy was trashed so badly I left.

When I asked around and watched a few YouTube videos people suggested staying in the ship.

The thing is, in their videos most of the targets where out in the open and easily hit. I think the problem I had on the later mission was everything was in a complex and I expect a lot of things where covered from 'air attack'. I was pumping missiles into the place, 12 on a pass, but nothing even showed it's hull bar by even 1%.

Anyway, this is a about the 4th or 5th time now I have come away from one of these missions realising they are not worth the effort.

Believe me they're easy, nothing is 'covered from air attack'. Try again with these simple steps, don't give up on these as they are virtually free money.

1) Change those missiles for frag cannons, set pips to 4-1-1 as you get out of glide.
2) As you get into the trespass zone, hit the left panel, contacts, select the mission target. It is now highlighted white (or red if it is a turret and it is hostile to you)
3) Keep getting closer and closer until you are about 20 METERS away. If it's a power supply, don't shoot the orange bit, go around the other side.
4) Spam the frags at the target, it WILL explode in ONE volley of three shots.
5) Boost into space.

That's it. Promise. :)

Dammit! Now I'm going to have to try these again :)

Like the OP I tried them a while back and gave up under the unrelenting fire as I entered the restricted zone, but I guess another attempt is in order - what could go wrong

...and let's be serious. That SRV is NOT a combat vehicle; it's an exploration vehicle. No competent engineer would design that buggy's plasma repeater targeting system to be THAT stupidly ineffective at the simple task of lining up on a STATIONARY target if it were supposed to be intended for something like Peace Thru Superior Firepower.

Every time I have to use that ill-designed SRV (mostly for mat gathering, because there's no other choice) and I have to put up with that lazy, droopy, drunken, targeting reticle that's just ALWAYS floating around JUST off (usually below) the SIMPLE, STATIONARY target only 50m away that I want to shoot, it makes me wonder what numbskull designed it and what the heck could they possibly have been thinking? Really? You have to jump into the turret to actually get your reticle to snap to a target? In the same universe where turrets elsewhere can auto target and hit an object 3km away, flying several hundred meters per second, with a projectile flying 660m/s? <snort>

THAT's why you satisfy these missions without leaving your battle-capable space ship!
