Newcomer / Intro Basic Discovery Scanner

I have build out a Viper with a spec I found online but swapped the basic discovery scanner for a fuel scoop as I am trying to get to Sorbacoc and its 245 light years away from where I am.

I amnot 100% on what a basic discovery scanner does and if I need it.

I have no interest in selling planetary data, is that all its used for?

A BDS is just for getting system data and then for getting planetary data after that. If you aren't going to be making money off of exploration then yes, it is useless.

I suggest keeping it for the travel along with a fuel scoop - I'm NOT an explorer so I pretty much only equip it whenever I need to travel large distances from Imperial space up to my friends who work in Federal space.

It's basically free credits just for going back and fourth. I have reached Explorer rank of "Scout" just by passively using as I jump from one system to the next.
Once I get to my destination I sell it off.

If you're going a long distance in a Viper (notoriously short legged) you may want to go ahead and lose the BDS if only to save on weight. You won't be able to identify any stars or other solar bodies you encounter but for a direct trip where you're only stopping to scoop there isn't any need for it.

That said, if you can make the trip with it and equip everything else you want there isn't any reason to drop it given that as was suggested above, it does amount to free credits.

I'm kind of a fan of having a shield. And you are far better off IMO with a fuel scoop if you plan a long traverse with a purpose and don't plan on doing a bunch of sightseeing along the way.
