Engineers Basic Rngineering questions

Greetings commanders!
And so I visited Farseer with my (one and only) ASPx. Brought meta alloys, 5mil exploration data.. figured out I have to log out and log in again couple of times (!?!!!!!!) and now happily running grade1 fsd and dirty thrusters. I can go up to grade4, if i bring materials.

Questions, which I couldn't find in pinned threads and are quite basic:

1. Pinned receipts - can I have more than one? How does it work in general - will I see ingredients list somewhere?

2. Any good location you can suggest to make a temp home and farm for grade 4-5 materials? Just an idea-I know some are rare so any advice is appreciated.

3. Now, do I understand it correctly, that only 1 mod is allowed? If I choose fsd range mod I can't apply fsd charging speed mod on top, correct? Or will that change at higher grades?

4. do you keep&swap two modules (like 2 fsds) in stock and swap them before a new engineering roll in order not to lose a good one? Or will that swapping kill rng chances?

O7!

1) EDEngineer indeed is the best thing you can have for engineering, love it!

You can also have a look at Inara to see which material and data drop where:

2) I have made my home in Wyrd, since it's pretty much at the center of all the Engineers, a nice central spot in the bubble and has The Dweller itself.

My main ways to get all most basic materials I need:

- HAZRes (preferably in an Anarchy system) to shoot down all ships, inculding transports, to get the materials needed from ships. From time to time I throw a CZ into it, to get those military exclusive stuff - don't forget to take collector limpet controllers with you (currently have 2x A3 on my Python).

- Surface prospecting - pretty straightforward, to get all those elements you need.

- High Wake Scanning for FSD mods. Just fly around busy stations from time to time and scan all those High Wakes. Absolutely best spot to do this are Trading Community Goals!

- My main problem are all those Firmwares. I know it's possible to do those Surface Settlement scans, but those aren't just for me. I just look for missions rewarding the Firmwares and Data I'm looking for, which I do get a lot of lately! It's also easy to go for those new CQC structures and scan the satellites they have. San Tu has one of those, not far from Wyrd, and you can constantly Low Wake in and out of the CQC structure to reset the satellite scans.

- Another tricky thing are materials only dropping from USS (High Grade). I read that the best way to get these is to go into a corresponding system (Boom state, Civil war, whatever you need...), fly like 75k to 100k Ls out from the main star, then slowly fly back to it and only High Grade USS should appear - don't know if this really works, will test it out today!

3) Indeed, only 1 mod per module is allowed - a new accepted roll will overwrite the old mod.

4) I use to keep modules with costly and good rolls on them and swap them with vanilla ones in case I want to change something - otherwise I will just overwrite them, since the module storage is quite limited (60 if I remember correctly).

Hey.

1) No idea sorry, never bothered with the pinning tool, I just wrote important stuff.

2) Grade 4-5 mats require you to move around to different systems, and perform different activities, in order to find them; so there's not really a "home" to have them all easily accessable. That being said, mats like Exquisite Focus Crystals are very rare, only showing up as high-tier mission rewards. So the best way to farm them is to get several/all minor factions in a system Allied, and then keep an eye out for any offering missions with EFC as a reward. So, in this respect, having a "home" will help you, but it doesn't matter where, as long as it's in Boom State.

3) One mod per module, no stacking. The, kind of, exception to this rule is Hardpoints, which can have one mod (Overcharged or Efficient etc) and an Experimental Effect on top, which is unique to the kind of Hardpoint, and category of mod you've just rolled. It will cost you rep to manually add it however.

4) You can keep multiple modules rolled with different mods if you like, however it seems you're a little confused about the reroll mechanic. If you get a good roll on a mod, you accept it. If you want, you can choose to roll again, see the results, and then decide whether or not to replace your original roll with it. You're not locked into a roll until you actually accept it, having seen the results. Previously accepting a roll will have no impact on the next roll, it can (and usually will) roll worse, but you can just discard it and keep your better roll. EG: My current FDL needed a G1 Overcharged Power Plant in order to power everything, but I run PAs, so keeping a low thermal profile was important, my first roll gave me the power I needed, but terrible thermal, so I kept it, but continued rolling. The next 5 rolls didn't give me the necessary power to run the ship, so I just discarded them. Long story short, I accepted 5-6 rolls, out of about 80, progressively getting better until I finally got a near-perfect roll (thank god OC1 is cheap).

Engineers are very complicated, it may be worth Googling some guides, reddit has a lot of info also. Best tip I can give is to plan, look up what engineers need to unlock, otherwise you'll be forced to repeat history for different unlocks (I had to mine 500T of ore for an unlock, I hate mining! 4 hours later, I docked, said goodbye to the filthy ore, and went to claim my reward. Turns out the engineer also wanted 10T of rare ore, and I just sold 12T of it......which took me 4 hours to mine......sad face. Didn't make that mistake again).

Question - can you take in cargo from ships you destroy without incurring the wrath of the local police?

Question - can you take in cargo from ships you destroy without incurring the wrath of the local police?

That depends on the legal status of the ship you extricated said cargo from. If it was an innocent in a non-anarchy system then you are likely to be wanted but not for scooping the cargo. All cargo collect from destroyed ships is ok. Its the process of getting them to drop it that may be at issue.

I only fight ships which are wanted. I don't normally cargo scoop because there are quicker ways to make cash and I wasn't sure if it was legal or not.
