Just wondering, do I need both? As in, do i need the basic discovery scanner just to detect the bodies in the system, and then be able to scan them with the detailed surface scanner? Or does the detailed surface scanner function as both?

You Don't need Both.
There is 3 discovery scanners. Basic with range of 500LS. Intermediate with range of 1000LS and the Advanced discovery scanner with infinity range.
You just need one of those. The discovery scanner find Objects in a system and you have to actively use them to find Objects. But they also work passive if you target and fly close to an Object ( unexplored), it will start to scan automatically.
You will get the name of the object and some basic info.

The other scanner, detailed surface scanner, works only passive, in same way, to get Objects name BUT the difference is you will get more detailed Info.
So a detailed surface scanner is an "extra" scanner but its not necessary to have. Only if you want that extra info and you will as well get a little more payment.

If we follow your logic, one really doesn't need ANY scanner if one doesn't want to sell data.
It was clear in the OPs post that he inquired whether or not one could REPLACE the Basic Scanner WITH the Detailed Surface Scanner...
Reason why he utilized the abbreviation "VS"
Which one CANNOT.
If YOU WANT THE ADDED INFORMATION and the added credits that come from selling said added information... YOU NEED BOTH.

Yes, but you don't actually need the surface scanner, your ship has a basic one built in. The DSS is nice to have (and if you're going to the trouble of exploring you'd be silly not to have it) but not mandatory.
If you don't have a discovery scanner at all though, a surface scanner us useless.
I understand Vikinger, ya just misunderstood my question. (it wasn't phrased perfectly anyway). I was just asking if I needed the basic discovery scanner still if I had the detailed surface scanner. Which as the other guys have answered, I do! Thanks for the help everyone¬

Frankly.. I've come to the conclusion that people need to learn how to read. I understood the question perfectly. Yet the urge to just 'prove some other guy wrong' is so strong that people stop using basic logic.

Then can I walk without a car? Yes, but you wouldn't have to pay for gas.

Also Nanoaranchy (love your name btw)... Having the Detailed Surface Scanner give you a LOT more than just a little more income. It doubles what you get from surface scanning.

Simple answer is that you can not, but saying that you need both is misleading. You don't need both, but you do need the basic/inter/adv. discovery scanner for the detailed surface scanner to function. There is a difference.
