Engineers basic unlock of PROFESSOR PALIN complete 5k ly travel

Ok, finally done it lol. What is the best way to go about traveling 5k ly? I was thinking of taking my beluga liner, it has the same jump distance as the asp, but has a larger cargo space, I was planning on stripping it to the bones and just adding extra fuel tanks and a fuel scoop, I can manage about 500ly before needing to refuel, im not intrested on making money on taking trips, just want to get the job done lol. Also after getting past 5k ly, could I kill my self and save the trouble of flying home and still get him unlocked?
Thanks

If you go for distance, its very much about fuel scope size versus FSD size. A simple Asp with a grand scoop can jump non-stop for +-37LY without stopping. Total fuel capacity is irrelevant, you'll scoop more as you pass each star than you spend each jump. In short: great fuel scoop is far, far faster than great fuel tanks with lesser scoops. And yes, after 5K you can kill yourself. WAIT FOR CONFIRMATION FIRST AND CHECK YOUR STATS! Ofcourse, an Asp is cheaper to destroy than a beluga...

you can self-destruct at the furthest point but consider that the journey will find you unclaimed systems, really help your explorer rank and can sell to help boost reputation for factions and some engineers as well as some credits. You can also go sightseeing on the trip to see some Alien stuff plus you'll need some fragments for Palin after the 5k ly unlock.

Try to plan ahead you might regret self-destructing for the sake of a few hrs travel in the long run.

Exploration is dull enough I wouldn't admonish you for self destructing 5k out, but ultimately the outward/return journey pales in comparison to fragment hunting.

CMDR StiTch!, now selling assisted suicide kits for those attempting to make friends with Palin.

Head for a nebula. There are some really nice ones out there. You never know, you might get to like it. I think the lagoon is over 5k? Not sure if the self destruct mechanism still gives you the 5k trip? Fragment hunting really isnt that difficult. A lot of folks seem to think of it as being booked in for a serious and potentially life threatening operation....

Because like most things in ED it's not about how difficult it is.

"Bring me 2 or 3 live UAs at once" could have been difficult and engaging. I am categorically the last person to want to ever use "the G word", but hunting instead for a large quantity of them...is a colossal waste of my time.

Colossal as in '20 minutes'?

Colossal as in '20 minutes'?

His reqs changed?

I had to get 25 fragments, with UAs producing 1 fragment or two if simply lucky (there were talks about ramming etc. to guarantee two frags but I quickly debunked them).

If you can find 20 UAs in as many minutes then I am humbled by your exploration skill, but as a combat pilot, nah mate. Just nah.

Or was "20 mins" just being hyperbolic because it's the only way to get a misguided point across?

Oh, you did it in the beginning? They got changed to a guaranteed three per piece (as with all 'self found mats'), and if you are in the shell you can reliably hit those USS. You only need 9 USS (just make it 24 rather than 25 already ...). Maybe it was 30 minutes. In any case not even remotely as irritating as 5000LY for the non-explorers. :D

9x 3 in about an hour cruising slowly from the star out to Merope 7 I believe... quite enjoyed hearing them squeal as they died! And not neqrly as irritating as having to grind my combat rating up to dangerous and 1m in bonds ;-)

Hot damn! That's a change and a half.

The 5k journey was part of the motivation for my "exploration taster" to Jaques. Quickly rekitted an iClipper, kept it armed because I condone being prepared for violence at all times, and went cruisin'.

I'm glad I did it, even if only because I now have an awesome iClipper screenshot collection, and because I can firmly give the verdict that exploration is boring as hell for anyone not into zen gaming ;)

Thanks, this motivates me to go to Colonia next week. I have unlocked Palin long time ago.

Pro tip: do not self destruct next minute after You reach 5000 ly.
Check left statistics tab, check if Palin is unlocked.

I did 5250 ly before both conditions occured. Went to see Thor's Eye, peacefull trip, nice view, no need for AMFU, chilling with Sidewinder radio.

Edit: dig the forum, there are several systems with lots of UAs. 25 minutes max.

Thats the most boring part 5k travel, I just waited the the message to say Palin wanted to see me then killed my self. The other parts are easy to do, unknown fragments you can get all in one go in about 10 min`s, to unlock lvl 5 took abit longer I followed 101`s videos and helped alot, I managed to get my scans from sol system from the stations around sol, there wasnt much waiting as plenty of traffic comming in and out, prob took me a good hr looking and scanning, you do need a fast ship :).

Just did it with a Krait Phantom with 44-49 LY range --- problem was almost all jump were far side of star arrival so fuel scoop round star adds mass :(
If you KNOW HOW TO TURN OFF FUEL SCOOP temporarily DO IT (and tell me how) - it could get you 3+ less jumps I'm sure.
Anyway - the trip there and back got me a FIRST MAPPED (HIP 84685 9) and- I was amazed... FIRST DISCOVERED BLU EUQ NT-Z C13-37 ---- wooohohoho

so do the long run there and back and take a detour
I've only been playing a couple of months - "first discovered by" made me cry

Go to your modules (right hand panel), select the fuel scoop, toggle 'active' to 'inactive'. Remember to reverse this procedure before using the last dregs of fuel jumping to a T class star, or have the Fuel Rats on speed dial.
