So I decided to take a break from my other stuff and took a look at the combat community goals. All I knew was that I had to be in one of a couple of systems to sign up. Namely Banki or Khasiri.
I went to Banki, it was first. I noticed the sign up station was 500kLs from starfall. <insert four letter word> that! ED why do so many of your events take place in systems where a half hour flight is needed. I don't think it lends much to the game.
A forum search later revealed that Matteucci Terminal was considerably closer (although its still not a short hop) to starfall than Banki. I docked and saw the event, sign up was the same as picking up any mission. I set off for BD+03, took my Cobra, not the best combat vessel I know but I have a real soft spot for this ship and this isn't a review of combat ships but of the community goal here. In short order I was in BD+03. Checked my contacts list hoping to see something clearly labelled [community goal pilots here]. Nothing. ED I think given this is a large operation you can afford to telegraph where pilots need to be to contribute. I headed to Hudson dock so I could search the forums again.
I found a post detailing a number of high intensity zones around BD+03 2338 3, I set destination and headed out again. As I entered SC I noticed a low intensity zone had shown up nearby, it was closer so I headed there instead. I dropped out to see a lively mix of ships blowing the <insert four letter word> out of each other. I set my faction and joined in.
I'll skip the combat report, they play just like any combat zone so if you've played one, you've played em all. I was annoyed that my first kill didn't report a bond however, the rest did and three Cobras and an Asp later I decided I'd sell the bonds so I at least have some participation in the event.
Back at Matteucci I sold the bonds and checked the community goal transaction tab. Initially it told me I had earned no credits. Grrrr. Searching the forums didn't give me an answer but by this time I was kinda sick of searching the forums. I decided to document my experience so far. I'm dual screen so the clients still running and I noticed that a few minutes later my bonds have now updated. ED I feel this should update quicker than it is, I appreciate this may have technical reasons due to updates and synchronization but still, from a player POV. I need to know what I've done has been recorded. I suppose I should get a better control over my emotions.
It was nice to see new events like this giving pilots an opportunity to compete in a PvE tournament but at the same time that is all this feels like. Come to <insert system> See who can kill the most. Cash prizes. For me however it lacked any connection to the universe I was playing in. I feel no empathy towards either side in the conflict. It just felt a bit.. shallow.
Anyway, I'm not here to flame ED, I think things like this have real promise. I'd like to get comments from other pilots on how they feel about it and most of all constructive comments on how it could be made better.
