Be Careful with the New Engineers

3.0 drops, and I'm ready to complete my G5 engineering on my few ships.

Upgraded a couple of FSDs and was all smiles. Upgraded a PD. Still smiling. Upgraded the beam lasers on my 'vette, and OMG.

This is gonna be fun. :)

Stopped by to do the conversion of my G5 resistance augmented shields. I 'assumed' that I would see similar before/after results. That was stupid of me...

I never thought I might have a roll that cannot be duplicated by the new system, because I have never done a large number of rolls on any module. Went in with shields at just under 3800 Mj, and after rolling up the new module, came out with 3100 and change. WTH...

And now I cannot get my old module back. I cannot uninstall 3.0 and go back to the old system, so basically I'm screwed. Wonderful game this. I almost rage-quit last night, but decided to sleep on it and decide later. I have a new game coming out in a few weeks, so maybe I'll just kick this one into the corner for a while and see if I even bother to fire it back up. ;)

So just a word of caution, the new system will not always give you a better module than what you had. YMMV...

I believe they said the new system is designed for better consistency and less "god roll" grinding so you get a better "average" across the board.

That said, they also said if you like what you had you could keep it.

Haven't even looked at upgrading any of my existing ships yet.

Always planned, however, to take any ship which has a G5 module to SD (where I don't have any other ships/modules stored), remove the G5 modules, replace them with stock ones, go and do all my new upgrades then go back to SD to compare the new with the old and then decide which one to keep.

So have you fully engineer to G5 the new shields and apply the experimental effect to raise the value, or just converted it?

Yes, fully engineered with a special to raise all resistances. Apparently, I had a real good shield boost and didn't see it. Everything else is similar to what I had before. I was (mistakenly) under the impression that the new system would generate similar or better rolls in an effort to get folks to use the new engineers. But apparently, that is not the case.

One step forward, two steps back. ;)

Maybe you had a really good boost to shield strength as secondary effect that is now gone since secondaries were removed?

Did you read any of the info on the new Engineering System before you went to use it? Seems you have access to the aforementioned data in this forum...

IOW: Do you use these forums for research or just when you want to complain?

Its all fair to say you don't like the new system, but you tip your hand a bit when you clearly did no research before diving in. If something was so important to me, I'ld try to find out a little something before I pulled the pin...

Situation easily avoided by thinking things through before taking action. Any engineered module using the old system should ALWAYS be kept in storage until you are sure you can equal or better its performance in the new system. This is basic stuff.

The correct module backup procedure: Buy a new stock module and store the original engineered module. Then engineer the new stock module and compare the results. If not as good, replace with your stored module and use the second one on another ship or sell.

See how easy that is? No anger, no tears, no forum post. Everyone wins.

Yep. I've actually been saving my old modules and grinding up new ones instead so I can compare them afterwards. Just to be safe and avoid what happened to you.

Exactly... this is my move also. During the Beta i engineered the ships im most concerned about and generally got better results...
But the beta is the beta and this is live... So im rebuilding my ships and banking my Grandfathered and will compared once done.

Im not willing to lose a single MJ or Pitch point.

True, but this requires slightly more materials since you have to take the new module from G1 through G4.
