General / Off-Topic Be wary of Samsungs Android replacement

I will never understand why a TV needs an OS :D

Ok maybe choosing an input and perhaps volume control and an off switch - but even that's more than I'd like it to have.

Samsung TV's in particular I find very puzzling. Why does it insist on changing modes? Why does it need to log me into a Samsung account? Why can't it find it's own upgrades? Why on earth does it slow down and need rebooted after using some "apps"? Why on earth does it have "apps"? And dear deity in a lulzbucket - why does it put red splodges everywhere?

And that's one of the countless reasons why I don't buy and use any device titled "Smart" or has unique features similar to them. They can range from smart-TV's, smart-watches, smart-thermostats, smart-clocks to... smart water? Anything. (Sorry, advertisers tracking me, that I won't ever buy stuff that'll help you infringe my privacy even more.)

Well they certainly messed up the Ethernet adapters :D

10/100 in this day and age is pretty miserable - not to mention the truly awful throughput. What is it powered by, a z80?

If you are just going to use it as a panel, they are pretty good! Even the cheaper 8-bit panels are quite tasty, as long as you don't pretend to get HDR out of them.

It's just the "smart" part that is more than a bit silly. I've got mine setup with a Chromecast as it's default gateway, so the "smart" can only do a whole lot of nothing.

TV has updated itself today to 1169.2

Now it will only allow PC to connect over HDMI at 30FPS, 1920 x 1080 interlaced.

What on earth are Samsung thinking?

Why can I not watch <ADULT STUFF> on my Samsung Smart TV browser? I think it has an incompatible version of Flash - why is that Smart?

After many factory resets and jiggling with settings, reinstalling drivers and all sorts of unnecessary fun I finally have 4k on PC working again :D

Half the video modes have gone though, HDR+ no longer works (no big loss on this panel) and the YouTube app is knacked beyond belief - but none of that matters for my useage.

PS4 and XB1 now default in "game" mode for some strange reason (it never did this before) and the annoying red blobs have (so far) not turned up.

I was <that> close to taking the silly thing outside and putting some nice 9mm holes in it.
