be wary when flying to distant systems with a fuel scoop

Yeah I've even entered a system once where I was pulled out of supercruise the very second I entered the system because the star was so powerful (not very big though). I took some damage and because I couldn't refuel I had no way of leaving. Talk about entrapment.

You can scoop white stars, too. Justn ot white dwarves or white T Tauri's. F and A types are fine.

Basically they have to be main sequence stars to be scoopable. Someone had a mnemonic to remember, let me see if I can find it...

edit - IT's 'Oh be a fine girl (or guy, I guess, depending on your inclination), kiss me!' for OBAFGKM, which are the scoopable types.

Because the 'Info' pane will display the star types of the primary star(s) even in an unexplored system, you always know just from the map if it is scoopable.

Also, Dablin, sounds like you found a neutron or white dwarf star. Both are tiny, hot as heck, and usually are the most massive object in their star system.

Also you must refuel using your fuel scoop once your fuel is half full. This will enable you to re take fuel from an appropriate star. Dont continue depleting your fuel till last moment and come up wit the star that you cannot refuel at.

You should be good to go with any main sequence star. Which are OGAFGKM. Size class III-VI should be good (VII are the white dwarves).

Hot giants may have some temperature issues.

It's a good habit to top up a little while scanning the star itself and doing your initial D-scan. Head towards the star and hit the brakes when the scoop starts. Select the star and start the scan. Keep an eye on the temperature, of course.

One of the penalties of flying with an almost empty tank I suppose. Though it shouldn't happen because even if a system is unexplored, the system map will still tell you what type of star(s) are there.

Before jumping, look at the info panel for that system in the galactic map. It will tell you the type(s) of star(s) in that system. (Don't worry about the numbers. The letters are important for scoopability.)
These are the types of stars you can scoop:

Big
Kettle
