Beagle Point - Asp or Conda

Honestly, just fly what you like. Jump boosts have put Beagle Point in range of all sorts of ships. I flew to Beagle Point in an Asp and loved it. I had no problem doing the Roncevaux crossing and making it there without using more than a tiny handful of J1 boosts in a 33 ly Asp, and I did the same thing coming back via route 33.

I've never owned an Anaconda, myself, but I think if I were you I'd do a 5-10kly trip in one, first, before you commit to Beagle Point. That's far enough that you can really start to see if you like the ship for exploration.

Don't be sorry when you're right! :D

T-6 all the way!

You really have succumbed to that vessel, haven't you?
I remember very well going back from Sag A* in my trusty T-6, and meeting you above that water-world in the middle of nowhere. You had an Asp. "Oh how cute that T-6, but nothing like my excellent Asp!"
The galaxy has truly gone mad...

Now to the OP:
I have tried exploration in various ships, but I always find myself going back to my Anaconda. I feel at home in it. I have a history with it. It feels like I am turning the galaxy around when I'm in supercruise (and by the gods it takes time to do that). So that is my preferred ship.
What I'm really trying to say here is: Go for the ship you are most comfortable in, and if that is the Asp, then the Asp it is. You always have the option to boost your jumprange through the use of materials or engineers, besides if you have a jumprange above 33LY's you will be able to get to Beagle Point without the use of any assistance (I got there in a 24,8LY's Anaconda).
Good luck, and fly safe :)

Thanks for the advice 😃

I found out I was very close to the 3rd rank FSD upgrade from Felicity Faster, so with a little bit of grinding I was able to get it installed. It took my full-tank jump range from 33.5lys to 38.8! So, yeah, I'm taking the Asp!

As I recall I called it far worse than "cute". I think my assessment had the words: "useless", "ugly" and "brick" in it :D And I doubt I ever called the hideous Asp boat excellent.

And all of that was based on an early encounter with the thing where I didn't have enough cash to get good thrusters and other equipment and it handled like a biplane with hippos hanging from the wings.

Also I already told you you were right and I was oh so wrong :D

With the new Engineers jump mods any ship can be taken with fairly little pain.

If you get close to the best rank 5 engineers FSD mod it adds up to 45% to your jump range, but for RNG's sake estimate with 35-40% increase as you don't want to roll that many times to get the very very top.

This means even a sidewinder with this loadout:
https://coriolis.io/outfit/sidewinder/0p3t3F0l3d3s3f1--02022o0d2i2f.AwRj41RI.Aw1-EA==

Can get it's 20ly buffed to 27-28ly.

This for me wipes out the usefulness of the Anaconda somewhat unless you really really want to race. The Anaconda is fantastic for range and internals but turns like a drunken Rhino. I'd actually use something I enjoy to fly in supercruise but has internals to spare like the Imp Clipper:

25.38Ly boosts to around 34.2-35.5Ly.

Anyway my 2p. I've been in an Anaconda exploring since December. Only seen a station for a change of paint and applying a Decal. Really great, love my 6A shields and 7A thrusters for planet landings and escaping NPC's but turning in SC is still an issue when I go to scan that ELW or whatever.
If it has to be one of the two I'd take a jump range boosted Conda for any trips where I am going point-point and an boosted Asp/Clipper for scanning planets and stuff.

I have the same sentiment towards upgrading Dilbert. If I can squeeze enough jump out of the FSD to not need boost to get to Beagle Point next year, I'll be a happy camper. Don't really feel the need to go furthest for this or that, so anything over 34 Ly will do.

Add better thrusters and shield for the increased peril that is promised us, and I'm game!

It's such a debate this one and one which I deliberated over for months pre DWE.
I love both ships.
Asp is an excellent explorer and one which got me to Sag A and back.
Anaconda is equally excellent and got me to Beagle point and back.
I'm using my Asp on the Crab Nebula exped on the 11th.
My advice: get both if you can afford it. Explore in both in equal measure. Both have excellent qualities, both are excellent. On the subject of deep deep long range expeds....I would advise Conda on personal experience, more range more internals more hardy on accidents (crashed at high speed on high g on DWE and survived).
However post 2.1 range is no longer moot, Asps can have upwards of 50Ly range.
NOONE will agree on this subject you just need to experiment CMDR.
Good luck.

I don’t know, some of the most fun I had coming home from the DWE was pushing my Asp out as far as I could on the galactic edge, trying to set new personal records for distance from both Sol and Sagittarius A. I soon realized that I would never be able to set the actual “best of” records due to my Asp’s 33.3 range, Anaconda’s just had too much of an edge in jump range.

While the engineers won’t change that, and the Anaconda will still hold the range crowns, if I can get my Asp up over 47 lys range I’ll be a very happy commander. No amount of jump range can compensate for that view out the front of a Conda, I just can’t explore in that! The view out of the Asp is worth the meager sacrifice in jump range compared to the Conda, IMHO.

Which is excellent! It takes all kinds of explorers.

Yeah. Dat nose. But you can get the Conda to look good in screenies. A feat I haven't yet managed for an Asp.

I still think the Asp Explorer should have the biggest jump range in the game, the clue is in the title...

Anyway Asp for me, really good ship for exploring, nice cockpit, plenty of space and decent jump range. I've done the bulk of my exploring in one. Going to do a mini-trip to get some data and then head for Farseer to up my drives a bit.

I had 5 or 6 Asps so far. I thought several times it would be the most rational choice. Everytime i made like 10 Jumps with it and soon got the concern, that this ship, that looks like a fly when landed, would be my companion on the next kylies. Not to mention that workbench-cockpit. Then i always began to think how awesome it would be to take a cobra, a python or something else. Then i always returned, scrapped that asp and switched to something what i like. Would 1000 times prefer an anaconda over the asp, if limited in these two options. But with 2.1 we can have vanilla asp range on many other ships

I will admit, the Asp’s cockpit is not my favorite in Elite. I love the view, but I much prefer something like the DBE’s cockpit. I pretty much prefer the looks of the DBE in general over the Asp, I just wish it had a faster scoop and one more size 1 internal. But, no other ship in Elite has the mix of range, internals, size, and flight performance that the Asp has. My second favorite explorer is the T-6, followed by the Cobra III.

I actually left the 'Conda at home and took the Asp.
-
In a couple of spots I would have liked the extra range the 'Conda provides... but for the one big drawback... it's a bear to land quickly (for me anyway, especially on higher G worlds :) )
-
As a prospector... that became the deciding factor.
-
Nearly home now and wouldn't have traded it for the world... and... since Engineer's is increasing that jump range... Asp will continue to be my "Go To" for exploration/prospecting.
