Beagle Point - question

Was Beagle an actual player? a person? was he the first person to reach out to the edge of stars and got his own system named after him? Or is it just a place the devs decided to put in.

Just wondering if anyone could clear this up for me. Thanks you.

Also the name of CMDR Erimus's ship, he made the first journey to that system.

And if I recall correctly his ship was named after his dog? So Beagle Point in this game is named after the dog of the first explorer to reach it

(disclaimer - I can't recall where I read about the dog… perhaps someone else can confirm?)
