Beagle Point, Sag A* in my Hauler

Thought I should do a write up for the adventure I've been having for the better part of a month across 104,000 LYs. I've been an explore for as long as I can recall, 95% of my career has been spent in a bright yellow Hauler, most of that time it had no mods. Compared to what I did to get to elite I was spoiled on this trip.

My ship and career long companion named "Magic School Bus" now is modded to nearly the max, with FSD range mods, light weight mods and a Guadian FSD booster, boosting my laden jump to 61.14LYs with a absolute max of 63.53. A two ton fuel tank has hurdled me through the galaxy for as long as I can remember, I can manage two jumps of 61LYs before being out of fuel and a 3a fuel scoop makes quick work of refueling.

Once I had all the mods and modules I wanted it was time to cross Beagle Point off my bucket list. I set out from Ceos on March 18th, running straight "north" towards Sag A*. I had to make a stop on the way to visit a system I had discovered a few years ago to map its three earth likes and scan a moon I had missed. The system is Zuni AS-J C22-544 if anyone wants to see it, it's like two thousand LYs "South" of Sag*. If it is to ever become populated let it be known here I wish for it to be named "Hauler's Reach". My progress was great and the trip very uneventful. I pulled into Explore's Rest (it's great having a port out that far now) on 3/19, cashing in a cool 102 million in scans.

After a rest I headed out for Beagle. I had no trouble besides plotting issues with the smattering of permit systems out in the boondocks. It wasn't until I was all the way out in Ryker's Hope did I find another undiscovered Earth Like, as it worked out Ryker's was pleitful in ELs, 6 in total there.

I grazed the extreme eastern edge of the Izanami sector on 3/20, having to head to that side to avoid more permit systems. I pushed into and through Newton's Vault that same day, finding many water worlds.

The Formorian Frontier was a long and boring journey, no good scans and unknown plotting issues made my course erratic.

Entering the aptly name Abyss on 3/21, the sky was growing darker and darker, quite a sight! Plotting issues became significant due to the limited amount of stars and my FOGKBAM filter for scoopable only suns. Through the Abyss my plotting was like it was in the old days, 1000lys or less at a time. I reached Beagle Point early in the morning on 3/22, I have to say I was rather proud of myself covering 65k in less than half the time it took me to get to Sag A* my first time. I took a few cool photos while I was there too to commentate the occasion.

Utterly burned out from making 1100 jumps in 4 days I took some time off, returning on 3/27 to head back to Sag A* following a similar course back I found more permit systems I had to work around out on the southern edge of the Abyss. Working around then I made good time and had lots of good scans, water and ammonia world littered the way. I found 4 ELs in Newtons Vault on the return trip as well as another in the Galcatic Center. I pulled into Explore's Rest today 3/31, cashing out 308 million in scans, bringing my total to 410 mil for the trip thus far and making me a billionaire for the first time.

As I write this I am heading towards Colonia from Sag A* before eventually heading home to Ceos, I plan to finish this write up once I'm back home.

My advice to any one thinking of Beagle Point is to use the FOGKBAM filter and only go to scoopable suns. With that filter on I've only jumped to one non scoopable sun in my 1700+ jumps I've made so far. This also will allow you to run smaller fuel tanks and increase your range. I did it with two tons, it certainly can be done. Also pace yourself, try and develop a rhythm for scoop/scan/jump and learn to identify stuff worth scanning at a glance. Other than the distance/time involved the hardest part is the clusters of permit systems you have to dodge. And above just go out and do it!

I am overdue to give my final update on my trip:

The run to Colonia was largely uneventful, through Odin's Hold I had some decent scans but nothing crazy, I pulled into port on April 1st. While in Colonia I bought a dolphin and did some sight seeing missions and made another 15 million. It was nice to take a break from exploration. Also while in Colonia I encountered some of the space creatures, that was a first for me.

I sold the dolphin and hopped back into the Hauler, heading out on April 3rd. I pushed hard that day, covering 11,000lys. I pulled into a planet port along the path to Colonia (can't remember the name of the port it was around 10k from the bubble.)

Shortly after leaving that port I found my final earth like of the trip bringing my total for the run to 12.

I pushed onward and made it to Pand on April 5th then home to Ceos the following the day. I made 505 million off scans along with the 15 million off passenger mission out in Colonia.

I'm glad I made the run to Beagle Point, it's one of those things I'm not sure I'll do again but still glad I did it. I hope you all enjoyed reading my trip log.

How come you've been so content to be in the same ship for so long, especially one so limited? How do you spent your time during sessions - YT, music, podcasts, etc?

Exploration in Elite is perfect for podcasts and trying out new music, which is either a compliment or an insult depending on someone's perspective. ; -)

Congrats on the trip, and for apparently staying sane. I started a trip to get surface mappings on ELW's and some other systems between the Sol bubble, the edge of the core, and Colonia last year, and upon returning to the game and doing the vast bulk of the journey in the last month or so, my patience was wearing extremely thin on the final approach/descent to Colonia... The straightshot back to the bubble is going to be hard, but I hope to simply travel as opposed to really explore. I can't resist certain signal sources, so stuff like ELW's and water worlds always get surface mapped, so there's a limit to my capacity to just keep moving.

I'm currently quite high above Colonia, though (after having handed my main trip data in, of course), pushing above the galactic plane. And whilst it's a very different view from Beagle (which I've not been to yet), obviously, it's one of the best vistas I've seen in the game so far. I love the, let's call it, poetic existentialism that's conjured by being in those kinds of positions in Elite's galaxy; the seemingly endless intergalactic void contrasted with the bright span of the Milky Way below.

I find the potential impact of that experience fascinating. Astronauts have spoken about how the view of Earth changed them, and literally gave them a new perspective on life/existence. Seeing our entire galaxy - encompassing all that we have ever been or will ever be - more or less within a single vista would be just as powerful.

I'm always drawn to the most extreme of locations in Elite for this reason, and given I RP a character it's relevant to her own journey/motivations, too.

I have a large group of friends active on xbox most of the time so usually I am in a party with them just talking but if im alone I don't really listen to anything, I might read some stuff on my phone if no ones online but usually it's just game audio. My sessions during this run were 3-5 hours at a time a few were longer, in two sessions. I usually looked at in in jump and distance knowing from experience how much time it should take while still being diligent with my scanning.

The same group of friends are Elite Dangerous players as well, many have asked me that same question as well "Why use the Hauler?". Well the biggest part of it is my loyalty to my ship, I've had my Hauler since probably my second day playing the game, it has grown with me through my career. Back then there was a one jump trade route in Empire space they all ran to make money, by the time a I joined most of them were starting to buy type 9s for the route. Being a new was rough, learning to fly, leave port safely but it was the interdictions that was the worst part. I was constantly pulled out and shot down since I was new and wasn't good at breaking them at the time. One day I had gotten sick of it and got back in my Hauler, gave it a fog horn and a surface scanner and flew toward the Coal Sack nebula. I enjoyed being out there, not bugged by NPCs, find new systems and once I returned I made a few million dollars, which was more than I had total before, so I stuck with it. Granted I've done other things too over the years, i am nearly elite in trade and have gotten to be decent in combat, but exploration is my niche.

The other thing was I saw how much money my friends were spending on outfitting ships, granted they made it back eventually but i figured, why bother, this little Hauler is making me rich and does everything I ask it to do. Plus I was sick of the Anaconda worship that they did, they are great ships and can do everything well but are so expensive and I wanted something different, something that was "mine" ya know.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on the emotional impact space can have on a person even in ED. I remember the first time I saw Earth in game, mind you I was nearly Elite in exploration before bothering with permits, it was thought provoking. There is where IRL every human has lived and died ever and in this game I've been all over the place and just now so I see where we all are. It's scale was not lost on me.

Excellent work, Cmdr. I'm nearing Beagle Point myself, travelling with the DW2 expedition. I'll be there in a few weeks I think. The return trip will be faster as I won't have to wait for new waypoints, I'll be able to get back in my own pace. Lots of Spotify is in order I think.

Er... a Hauler!! o_O:rolleyes::censored:
Boy do I hate that ship.

However... hearty congrats CMDR, just shows there's love enough in this funny old cosmos to go around.
I agree with you about Earth though, I give you a pic of my first visit, featuring the 'precious stone set in a silver sea' where I was born. 07

Going completely OT here, forgiveness please.

I notice that your forum avatar is animated, Zoltah-Talion. How'd you manage that?

With great difficulty!
No, but seriously when the board changed over it wasn't moving, so I tried uploading the gif again. Refused to work until I found a way of compressing the file size down to about 600 kb. Even then when you get it uploaded, you have to wait a while for the site's cache to clear or something. Just persist! ;)

On the same vein as viewing Earth from a new perspective, in case you hadn't seen it before look up the "Pale Blue Dot" photo and check out Carl Sagen's accompanying writing. That's some extraordinary stuff!

I know what you mean, Carl Sagan is actually one of my heroes. Reading Cosmos, (the book of the famous TV series) changed me for ever way back when.

I guess you will know the role he played in the creation of the famous golden record which was sent out into space aboard the Voyager space probes, something I touched on briefly when I recently had the great pleasure of catching up with Voyager 2 in the game.

I'm not sure I could tolerate that. Exploration stints are perfect opportunities for podcasts and Spotify. Your attention is rarely truly needed, so it's killing two birds with one stone, so to speak.

I can understand being rather tired of the sight of Anacondas. Just like the AspX, it's a ship that requires no real effort or thought to be effective (I tend to use alternate characters to try out ships my main creation wouldn't use, the Anaconda and AspX being two). But the Hauler represents the exact opposite end of the spectrum. ; -) I eventually got a Hauler, but it's only ever used to avoid ship transfer fees (and the downtime) in the bubble (named Der Floh - The Flea - by Godnamedthor, because all it does is jump... ).

It is fun to occasionally - usually once or twice every several months - ahem... hop into that ship, simply to remind myself of the sense of scale of the other ships, and also to appreciate how tiny and nimble it is around stations. So it has some character. But not nearly enough to make up for its objective weaknesses in every area.

Oh, and if you don't RP it won't matter to you. But I do, and I think any person would go insane stuck in such a tiny ship for months on end... ; -) I'm starting to head back to Colonia, then back to the Sol bubble in the Orca. I have an old Python drydocked in Colonia from my first visit, so I might try out the new mining mechanics before shoving it back in storage and departing.

Yeah most of my friends in the game will watch tv or YouTube and fly mainly by vibration so they don't smack into stars lol

It was one of those things I didn't plan, like when I got into combat heavy for the first time I kitted out a Python knowing that this is this ship's job. The Hauler was just sitting in mothballs and I just hopped in and went. After a few trips into the black I was hooked and I learned a lot, I realized my Hauler did everything another ship could do (I carry no weapons, shields, utilities or non-scanning/FSD boost modules when exploring) so a gutted Hauler is all I need.

The RP end of it has crossed my mind, I can't wait for space legs so I can see what the captains quarters looks like...I'd assume cramped lol. One part of me using a Hauler as well is in honor/admiration of IRL sailors who covered vast distances in undersized vessels, either for the challenge or from desperatation. My wing mates joke that there's a broom closet with a bucket for the bathroom and an air mattress deflated somewhere in my ship, sounds about right haha
