Newcomer / Intro Beam lasers keep firing even when I don't push the fire button

Hi Guys,

Technically I'm not a newcomer to the game but when it comes to anything combat related I am as green as they come... ;-)

Yesterday I bought a pair of E2 turreted beam lasers for my Asp, breaking with my year-long habit of flying unarmed ships. The idea is to use the lasers for defence against pirates. Aaanyway, when I deploy the hardpoints and then push the fire button for the first time the lasers will continue firing without pause, even when I release the fire button. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Or is that how these particular lasers are supposed to work?

(I'm using a Saitek X52 and have bound primary fire to the index finger trigger on the stick.)

Thanks in advance guys!

Turrets will fire all the time you have the target; targeted.

Go to right side panel, tab to functions; the last tab. Look down and it will offer options for turreted weapons.

You have three modes:

1) Forward. Basically just fixed, but weaker.
2) Target only. Works as a turret, but only fires at hostile ships you have actively targeted. Keeps firing until you select a weapon group without the turret.
3) Fire At Will. Fires automatically at every hostile ship in range. Keeps firing until you select a weapon group without the turret.

So make sure you have two weapon groups: one with and one without the turrets. Switch between them, and use the 'empty' group as a safety. Make sure you have at leats one non-turreted weapon to inititiate combat: turrets dont fire at wanted ships imemdiately, you have to attack them first or wait to be attacked until turrets kick in.

when was that put back in?
jus a few weeks ago, it was changed so in target only mode, turrets would only fire as long as hit the fire button.

Target-Only never changed. It's been "Keeps firing until you select a weapon group without the turret." for a long time now.

Fire At Will seems to have changed. I haven't gone to much trouble to test this, but I think currently Fire At Will only shoots while the trigger is pressed... in Anarchy systems and when there is no police response available (stupid, because that's mainly when I want to use Fire At Will). In other words, it wants a perfect connection to system security in order to tell whether a ship is Wanted so it knows whether to fire on its own.

The fire at will option only fires with your finger on the trigger and stops when you release, but a wanted ship is not a valid target for the fire at will option until it has become hostile to you by firing on you. That is the reason sleutelbos said you need to carry a fixed weapon to open combat. Then when his wingmen open up on you, they are now hostile and fire at will will brass them all up as they come into range. The other, but slower option, is to set the turrets for target only and initiate combat on one of the wing and then when they all start on at you, switch to fire at will and have at it.
