beam lasers or frag cannons v Thargoid scouts

Hi,

Got a Challenger with 4x AX multi-cannons on it and I'm looking for something on the 3 small hardpoints. This is only for Thargoid scouts. I won't be taking on interceptors or any other npc ships. I play Mobius, so it's PvE only.

I can't use fixed weapons for love nor money and I'm not about to start, so they're out. I've tried gimballed multis and gimballed beams (all G5). What are frags with double shot or overcharged like? Do pacifiers give any advantage (assuming they come in gimballed format)?

I just added more gimballed, either short range g3, or overcharged multicannons.

But my challenger has since been upgraded with 3x C2 Guass and 1 large Shard for interceptors, and 3 turret MCs for scouts, but they don't do a great deal of damage. Tempted to swap them for thermal vent beams to cool my ship quicker after guass salvos to allow rapid fire of them.
 
If you are having trouble firing fixed, this is a very good opportunity to train yourself to get better with them. Switch to night vision (it picks out the scouts nicely) and learn to ignore the targeting circles for the other weapons. Fire at the target when it is getting close before it darts away.

My rail gun targeting has improved no end since firing at these scouts. I can pick them out at a distance with the night vision, but the damage at long range is not very good. They are better at short range.
 
Yeah, Ikow, but tbh, I just can't be bothered. The only reason I'm fighting Thargoids in the first place is that it's the fastest way to increase combat rank and I need to be deadly to unlock one of the engineers.

@Attack Chimp: What's AP? No heat or distributor problems.

I think it's well past time they gave us gimballed AX multicannons and the ability to engineer them. I'm fine with the Guardian weapons being fixed.
Also engineering for the other human weapons so we have a reason to use them.
Oh and the Ax scanner needs longer range for use in Thargoid CZ's.

Try pulse or burst lasers with focused.
 
I wouldn’t use frags if i were you dave, i am not bad now with fixed weapons, was trying out guardian shard cannons earlier in an AXCZ, with a view to trying to use them when the interceptors dropped.

It was infuriating trying to get close enough at the start, as the scouts paused to hit them, much easier with gauss. Took far longer than normal to do the first stage. I would go with beams, long range is good, pick up a few easy kills when the npcs are doing their thing if you are just combat grinding.
