Because a few folks have asked about my Rift.....

So I'm two weeks out aboard the Limited Contact Unit "You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone" on a 14000 light year round trip survey mission to Eta Carinae. You'll Miss Me is making around 700 light years a day which is pretty good going for an LCU. I can thank the 21st century popular scientist Brian Cox for this endless track of nothingness. "Eta Carinae - a supermassive stella powder keg nearing the end of it's fuse!" ...sounded interesting at the time and after a year plying the space lanes hauling cargo I was ready for a change.

It seems though that deep space is dull. You just wont believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly dull it is. I mean, you may think it's dull sitting in a doctors waiting room for those test results but that's just peanuts to deep space.
.
We're plotting a course taking in the Neutron stars we can find along the way. Deep field survey data on these gets a good price back at the Guild and it helps to releave the boredom. More than that, it gives us something to aim for as the navicomp won't plot a course over 1000 Lys.
.
I used to hunt pirates or drift under the fields of the local authority vessels in a powered down icebox for a living but the most interesting thing I've done since leaving the Bubble and passing beyond colonised space is noticing that the paralaxing of stars on a journey this long makes for some interesting shapes out of the bridge windows. You'll Miss Me disagrees. It prefers the phycodelic swirl of hyperspace but what the hell does a ship Mind know anyway - apart from just about everything.
.
I'm on the bridge for a an hour or so a day, sometimes longer when I can build up the enthusiasm to go "Oooow!" at a passing Neutron star. My downtime is on the recdeck in a virtuality simulation called FirstLife where I spend my time going back and forth between two buildings amassing credits. It passes the time and there's lots to spend your credits on. The simulation is fiendishly devious in it's attempts to defeat you however but it does throw in the odd random side mission to keep your attention.
.
We're due to be drawing level with the Statue of Liberty nebula around now so when you look up into the night sky in the direction of Sagatarious don't wave or anything because we won't be able to see you.
