Been away from game a while, have quick question re: Horizons/Non-Horizons gameplay

I did some forum searches but couldn't find the answer.

Can a player w/o Horizons be in the same instance as one with? I assume that the answer is no but I'm not 100% sure.

Been away from the game for over a year and have close to 20 hours of gameplay since returning and I have only seen another commander once & that was during a big      CG a couple of weeks ago. Other then that, nada. Now it was a rare occurrence back then too but I'd still at least catch a glimpse of one or two on the scanner every few hours.

I'm planning on getting Horizons but wanted to make sure the game could draw me back in first.

As far as i know (never tried), horizons and non horizons players can play together (even in open) as long as they don't go down on planets, or at least that was what was said.

That's been my understanding from the moment they announced Horizons, although I also haven't tried it knowingly. Obviously I might have seen or met other Commanders in game who as far as I know might be playing a non Horizons version.

Well I know for sure that they can play together on group. I cant see the logic in mixing populations in open where one group has an insane equipment upgrades and the other has none. Then it becomes a pay to win situation and I would hope that FD isnt that naive when it comes to online gaming.

All players (except XBox) are in the same 'space' whilst in open, regardless of version.

Well then lesson learned, don't assume common sense on design implementation from FD. I stand corrected.

Without opening the can 'o worms too wide, as this is very much an opinion 1 vs opinion 2 topic. I guess it comes down to would you risk a perceived P2W scenario against dividing the players that can see each other in game even more.

For just me personally I wouldn't even attempt to log into open for pvp on original ED because there is simply no way to compete. Two pilots of around the same skill, same ship, one modded one not. Modded wins, no ands, ifs, or buts about it.
If I was a elite dangerous player trying to grt my feet wet in pvp, finding out that that I have to dish out more money for the expansion just to be on the same level would be infuriating.

Just my two cents

Yeah well, spare a thought for the Mac users, they don't even get a choice. They share the same space as us PC users and they could throw money at FD until they were blue in the face. They are not getting Horizons for the foreseeable future and with that no Engineers .

True, I shall shed a tear for thr mac users and for Lord Admiral Nelson.

Thanks for the answers. Now I know why I keep getting all this material (in my other cargo holds) that is obviously meant for engineers even though I don;t have access to them yet. So how does the game handle a wing (of mixed players) where someone wants to land on a planet? Does the non Horizons player just get stuck in orbit?

The non horizons would just automatically drop out of super cruise into normal space once they bit the occlusion zone, whilst horizons players would enter orbital cruise.
