Been away from this game for 2 years. Any news of development for 2019?

I have not played Elite for 2 years. I am mostly interested in the BGS as a means to provide a reason to play. i have not payed attention to the direction the game has been taking during that time. Is there any news on further development in this area for 2019?

The BGS has been updated in the latest version (3.3) though it's still in Beta at the moment - have a look at the Beta forum. There have been no annoucements for 2019 yet, though much speculation...

Just wait for 3.3 release in 2-3 weeks, you will log in and find a completely different game to the one you left 2 years ago. No exaggeration.

I have not played since 2.1

New changes seemed too gimmicky to hold my interest and I just lost all my enthusiasm. I hope these changes will be just the beginning to adding more depth to the BGS area of the game which I always felf had the most potential for making a better game. Something to look forward to. :)

Well, in the last two years, I'd say there i no aspect of the game that has not been 'touched' in some way. Some things are WILDLY different now to what they were before, mining for example. Some things are not different, but much improved, such as the Engineers. Some things have not had as much attention as they needed, such as mission boards and mission generation, but they are still better now than they used to be. Only outfitting remains largely clunky, horrible and basically untouched since launch.

I'd suggest over the past couple of years, the main features that might appeal to you, which have some depth, and therefore aren't gimmicky, are probably just the mining and exploration changes about to arrive. There's also some new exploration content to find.

Personally, I don't think it's enough to entice me back, so my hope is now ED4 next year which I'm hoping is atmospheric landings to make exploration ever more diverse and interesting.

I think the key is not to hope for anything in particular. The game tries to be many things to many people and I think this forces FD to spread their resources thinly in many areas instead of excelling at one particular thing which would result in a game with a much smaller scope. They can't win really.

I am looking forward to hearing what they have planned next. Surely the next one has to be a paid expansion?

Possibly... Maybe...

The likes of Multicrew, Megaship gameplay, Generation ships, Engineers V1 & V2, modules after modules to grind for, and a snail pace vapid alien invasion with precious little meaningful depth and content has made too much of the two+ years questionable dead end bolt ons for me.

The recent patch is - at long last - a sign of something more interesting (IMHO), but this change in ethos now needs to continue and ramp up. As I said, I now hope ED4 will prove to be a truly more involved and bar raising development.

You are using that word 'hope' again. Don't go down that road. I would guess FD has done the most intensive development they are going to do on ED already. Anything else is an extra. If it is paid for, it will have to contain something to make people buy it. So, as much as we don't like paying for stuff, it is probably better if we do. You refer to it as ED4. I know what you are saying, but I am not sure ED4 as you put it would be viewed as a new game no matter how much it addds to the existing program. To the world outside, ED is no longer a new game and never will be until it is marketed in that way. So, if it is actually 'season 4', then it will only have as much development as is required to milk the work they have already done. Horizons for example offered far more than season 3 did from what I read of it on their website, despite the rehashing and bolt on gimmicky additions you refer to. Workwise, it was bigger. A paid for expansion at least has hope (ohno, iused that word) of providing something more substantial.

Yes, "hope" :)

As it stands, and as it stood 1-2yrs ago, it's not progressed as I would personally have liked (to the degree I'd like). The recent patch is (for the first time in years) enough of a change from this to give me hope. And supposedly with some new content greenlit and in development, I'm "hoping" ED4 next year will bring some content to entice me back (eg: atmospheric landings).

If it's doesn't, oh well! I had more than my money's worth out of it in the first few years so I'm not complaining as such ;)

ps: Ultimately, I'm hoping ED4 finally gives me a reason to believe there are 100 folks working on this thing.

Ha ha, yeah.

Total War Warhammer 2 and The Long Dark are about the best games I have played in recent years. I think it is better to just play something else instead of getting upset about Elite. Then come back and take a peek. If you find a reason to play then have fun, if not, abandon it again. It is the kind of game that really needs twice or three times the number of people working on it to do it justice, but that is just not realistic, so best not to 'hope' or fret about it.

As a wise man once told me - "it is what it is".

I will have a pop in and take a look. 2 years absence should provide me with some wow factor to enjoy :)

Let us know how you get on then :)

I had a nightmare installing the game. It wouldn't work and I had to update the graphics driver. Then I was faced with redoing all my controls. Ugh... That was enough to make me turn off the game and come back to it when I have time :)

Maybe Friday when I have a bit more time to waste. :)

I hope they sort the new controls for the DSS and FSS before release then, else you'll go bonkers :)

Good to see you back on here! I've recently returned to the game, hoping that the extra bits and pieces, plus squadrons, would provide more interest. I've pootled around in the beta, but I'm not yet sure it'll hold my interest long-term like it once did.

Since you were last on, Engineers is the main thing I've spent any time doing. I actually enjoyed hopping around (and beyond) the bubble to get the requirements and go and do upgrades. The downside is that if your ship isn't engineered you'll have a hard time against the much-improved NPC combat ships. CZs are flippin' hard these days!

Hope to see you on our Discord soon! Lugh Lámhfhada abú! o7

Hey Nightstorm! Good to hear from you too!

I still have not done my key bindings yet. I will probably have a go on Friday when I have more time. Life is busy these days and it is hard to justify playing computer games when children need your attention and house life takes up all your time! I am sure you know what I mean?

Total War Warhammer 2 is a great game and I have been having fun with that. Also The Long Dark is one I just keep going back to. I have gotten a lot of mileage out of those two games and I don't have the attention span for games I once had anymore. Worth a look if you want to try something new.

As for Elite, I will give it a chance. It has been two years. The next news about season 4 should be interesting to see what development strategy they take.
