Been Gone So Long

Hello Fellow CMDR's

It's been nearly a year since I have played and have just purchased Horizons as well as a HOTAS. I spent a few hours yesterday setting up my HOTAS bindings (in training missions), and when I went to my game I found that I am still approx. 1500ly from the bubble and now have a few questions.
1) How do I locate the closest station to me because I need an SRV (do I have to scour the galaxy map)?
2) Since I have to come back to the bubble to get an SRV I was wondering if my weaponless and sheild-less ship will be safe?
3) Engineers - is there a good resource to read up on what they can do for explorers?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. Fly safe CMDR's (oh yeah....... It's great to be back).

Turn the galmap to Map mode and set it to show governments, scroll towards the bubble until you start seeing non-grey systems. When you get to the edge scroll around and check systems you can see the sysmap for to find somewhere high security with a station close to the star.

Have a look at https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/164893-Safe-Harbour-Systems-List as well (not sure how up to date that is).

I've been out since pre-2.1 so I know nothing about engineers :)

Depending on where you are, Try Quince, Sothis, Ceos, Maia or any of the other stations far from the bubble.

Come in Solo mode and run like hell if you get interdicted.

If you're in Medium pad size ship, Robigo should be quiet.

Welcome back!

1) How do I locate the closest station to me because I need an SRV (do I have to scour the galaxy map)?
If you are 1500 ly away from the Bubble, then I would just head towards the Bubble at this point. Once you're closer, then you can start deciding where you want to aim for. If you don't already know this trick, you can change the Galaxy Map filter to "allegiance" and get a nice view of the various volumes of space controlled by the different powers, providing a nice visual indication of where the Bubble is in relation to you.

Also be advised that the Galaxy Map now has a bookmarks feature. So once you do figure out which system you're heading towards, you can bookmark it to find it more easily (for example, if you have to make the trip in multiple play sessions, since your route won’t be preserved).

You can use eddb.io to find a station that stocks planetary vehicle hangars, which is the component you need to buy in order to use SRVs. The size of module you purchase determines how many SRVs you can carry at a time; and your module will come fully stocked with SRVs. If you destroy an SRV, you can buy replacements from the reload screen at stations, same as buying ammo and limpets.

I highly recommend that you buy yourself a Sidewinder, fit it with a hangar, and practise landing in that a few times, especially on some worlds with heavier gravity. If you wreck the Sidey, you're no worse for wear. On a similar note, while you can still get away with turning off your shields to conserve power/reduce heat during your interstellar flight, I would recommend fitting your explorer ship with light shields. Without shields, it is very difficult (and tedious) to land on a planet without shaving precious chunks off your hull integrity.

Yes. Despite what you may have heard from various corners of these forums, the NPC AI has not gone rogue (well, actually, it did go rogue in one sense, but Frontier promises they fixed that and destroyed the AI before it could lead to Skynet…). Just don't take on any cargo and don't take any missions until you've sold your exploration data/upgraded your ship.

If for some reason you do get interdicted, then yes, combat will probably be more challenging. However, the standard evasion tactics still apply: submit to interdiction, boost boost boost, have another system targeted so you can high-wake out.

3) Engineers - is there a good resource to read up on what they can do for explorers?
As usual, our community rocks: some awesome commanders have set up a feature-filled spreadsheet describing the various upgrades/requirements available from the engineers. In particular, you'll want to look at Elvira and Felicity, because they do FSD upgrades. I have been out of the Bubble since pre-2.1 myself, so I can’t comment beyond that. :)

On a related note, if you are looking for materials, you can check out this prospecting database (which pulls data from another awesome spreadsheet). This will help you find planets to visit in order to prospect for the materials you might need for upgrades.

For more help on things like prospecting, I recommend looking up YouTube videos. There are so many good ones out there that will walk you through how the whole thing works.

Thanks for the tips CMDR's, it is much appreciated. I think I will slowly make my way back to the bubble and then spend my long weekend (Canada day) selling my data and checking out the new updates. Has anyone upgraded their FSD with an engineer and if so what can one expect in terms of extra jump distance?

I use an exploring vessel that is a sitting duck for pirates. For that reason when I am returning to dangerous space I follow this pattern.

1. When returning and I enter a system and I see another ship... I FSD to the next system. No sense in finding out if they are friend or foe.
2. Once I get fairly close to my destination and I am still in the un-populated universe (10 jumps) I try and scoop to "full" at every star until I am able to jump to my final destination without scooping.
3. Once my tanks put me in range of my destination and I no longer have to scoop I don't sit in a star system. I immediately FSD OUT ASAP. This almost entirely protects you from interdiction. You only leave the cool down cycle and power up cycle for someone to interdict.

I think someone said above, but using the galaxy map you can tell how far your quantity of fuel will get you. Observing where your flight path on the galaxy map changes from a solid yellow line and becomes a dotted line. This is where you HAVE to scoop. Make sure it is a scoopable star.

Depends a lot on how much time you can spare for collecting the required materials!

I'd guess the theoretical max is somewhere about 45% (that's the optimal mass increase, but I don't know if that translates directly to jump range increase). However, that doesn't include Secondary effects, which could potentially boost that a little more. Then also if you go for lightweight mods elsewhere, you can also boost your range a little by reducing your ship's weight.

45-50% is pretty substantial, considering it has a greater-than linear effect, since not only can you make longer jumps, but it opens up shorter routes instead of the plotter having to find the 'long way around'.
