Newcomer / Intro Before I go find rares and try to sell them?

The further away from the source, the more profit you make. I have made 17,000/ton at around the 200ly mark. Look for the 71Stop Rare trading route. Gives you stops, what to buy, and where to sell for maximum profit. If you take a Advanced Discovery Scanner along with a Detail Surface Scanner, you can augment your profits with discovery credits. I did it first with the "Fastest" route and made about 1 million in exploring, and now I am doing it again, this time in "Economic" and I am only about 1/3 the way through, and have already made another million or so in scanning. I also submit to every NPC (I play exclusively in a private area) interdiction, and I made about 1 million the first time around, and so far I have made about 500,000 this time around. You can successfully work on all 3 rankings with this route, and not get bored: some trading, some exploring, and some fighting. A good mix.

EDIT: Here is the link (and no you do not NEED this, it helps): https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=101211

So they can be sold at any station? As long as it is far away?

You don't need a long 71 stop trading route.
There is a very profitable route with 20 stops, just search for rares. Easy to make 300k creds an hour.
I fly a Cobra with 40ton cargo space.
Long routes can be more varied of course.
I trade rares to equip my bounty hunting passion.

You can sell them near by but that will kill the profit. Some are illegal in certain systems but you can sell them on the black market (I don't think you get fined if scanned).

Sold at ANY station, near or far. Some are illegal. If you have illegal, currently they will not fine you. However that can change at any time, as they tried to do so in 1.1, however they ran into a slight issue, so they backed it out. Just check the station where you want to sell on the Galaxy Map, and see if it is illegal there. Also, now, where usually it states that you are WANTED, they will inform you if you have illegal cargo for the current system, so you should know BEFORE any scans. And they just fine you. If you do not pay that fine within 24 hours, then it becomes a bounty, and anyone can open up on you.

The 71 route is am epic one. I did it once, but never again. The simpler popular route (Google ed rares route and it will show under images) is a lot quicker, just as profitable, and not at all arduous

So when you get scanned do they immediately start firing?
You just get fined for carrying illegal cargo. You only get shot at for loitering in a station I think (apart from attacking ships of course).

Yes but the 71 route, if you are into multi-role can be fun. More opportunity to bounty hunt and you also get to find the `Palm Tree` stations.

What is an example of the profit to be made? Making sure it is woth the trouble finding a planet.

If you can find a decent cluster of rare stations, and another cluster 160ish LY away to sell at, then you can make around 600-800k an hour easily. This is pretty much the max that you can make with trading in any ship smaller than a T6. If you have a T6 or bigger already, then you can make more doing standard trading, because rares do not scale up for your cargo space.

There's plenty of examples already online showing where you can find clustered routes, so I won't detail that here. The well-publicised 71 stop route is not really a profit-exercise. You will make money, of course, but it is not max credits over time, it's more about making the journey and taking stops to do other stuff on the way.

I kept rare trading in an Asp with 80 tons of cargo space between Lave, Diso, Orrere etc. and Fujin, Momus Reach, Witchhaul etc.

Added some more remote stations with rares to my round trip and made 1.3 million one way. Took longer, though.

Pick carefully and you don't need clusters. I run a rare route of 3 stops and carry >40 tones of rares on the way back to the start (about 15-17 on the way out). Fewer stops makes the run much quicker. Good way to build up a bit of a cash buffer to go and doing something more interesting.

I have your same setup. How many do you buy at each station? Adding those number up it goes over 36 tons. Does it matter?
Those numbers are the maximum amount of rare good tons you can find at each station. Usually the amount is much lower. I had to go from Orrere to Uszaa because my ship wasn't full yet, and there still was some space left even after Uszaa. However, when I later did the return route (from Witchhaul to Zaonce), my ship was already full at Zeessze and I had to skip George Pantazis. Your mileage may vary.

You'll very rarely get your full allocation of rares on your first visit to the station. If time is important to you then just take what's there and move on. I'm not in a hurry so if the full allocation isn't there I'll head out to the nav beacon or RES and do some bounty hunting then go back and get some more. Repeat until i've got the whole allocation.

If you're doing the 71 stop route you'll only need about 80 tons space for most of it but when you hit the Lave cluster you'll need more like 120 tons or you'll have to skip some stops.

If you have a smaller ship there is a nice cluster around Lave consisting of Lave, Leestie, Orrere, Uzzaaa, Zaonce and Diso. You then take them to 39 Tauri, Fujin, Witchhaul, wolf 1301 and Momus Reach. This will take you a few hours and will get you around 2 million profit.
