Before super cruise assist

and its fast drop technique / bug / feature, there were ways to drop on a station fast which had to do with doing a circle around the target as you got close and/or using the planets gravity well to slow down fast. I'm fussy one the technique, but I'd like to try it again. I think this old technique may have only work on drop targets near gravity wells unlike the supercruise assist fast drop.

I used to know how to do a fast drop without super cruise assist, but I've lost what the finer details of what the technique was. There were threads here on it and very good videos, but I can't remember what to search for to find them now.

Any help from the old pros in finding and regaining the ability to do the techniques would be appreciated.

Thanks

The two techniques I use are spiralling and "clipping" the planet.
Spiralling involves going full speed until the time to target is 6-7 seconds. Then drop throttle to 0 and yaw and roll. This spirals your ship.
Clipping the planet is a little harder as you have to clip it at the right speed. You clip the planet on a 90-180 degree angle to the station while dropping throttle to 0.
Both require correct timing and it's still possible to overshoot. With a little practice this almost becomes muscle memory and you won't even realise you're doing it.

In SC gravity braking isn't, at least not in the way it actually works in normal space. Approaching a planet in normal space accelerates you towards the body, as you pass the closest point it then slows you down again. In SC approaching a body slows you down due to the increasing gravity well and it's affect on SC travel, once you pass the closest point of approach you start accelerating again.

So it's not the same as gravity braking in normal space and you need to take that into account when planning your approach. I personally don't have a SCA installed on any of my ships and always rely on the old methods of slowing when approaching planets and stations.

Yeah, this is kind of what I remember. There were some good videos on it. Wish I could find them.

spiraling and clipping are two primary tricks, and there's also a few on planetary bodies etc. to improve acceleration

Videos that showcase best practice are the buckyball records, they use all the tricks in the book to use gravity in their favour.

there is also another exploit / bug / feature of the SC assist module that lets you go from 0-2001C and back instantly, if you know you know kinda thing.

Yes! That's one of the vids I remember! Thanks

I didn't know about the instant acceleration bug of the SC assist. Sounds a bit too over the top cheaty for my taste.
