Beginner explorer

I've been playing for about a month. I'm just rigging up an (unengineered) exploration AspX and fancied the idea of looking for undiscovered thargoid surface sites. Galnet trends suggest that the Coalsack nebula is an active area -- is travelling there, visiting a known barnacle site and then looking for unexplored systems likely to lead to boredom and frustration? Or boredom and frustration followed by a brief period of excitement and a rebuy screen? Or is it worth doing? Or should I go somewhere else?

Yes all of it to varying degrees :)

Finding an undiscovered site will be hard but not impossible, but you finding a site by yourself...or something else...is its own reward for me, dont care if its on the players 'map', I didnt use the tools to find it, I discovered it.

Look into where they tend to be numerous....theres a possibility that the recent update added more than just to the CSN, possibly not, but thats exploring. You never know :)

Coalsack is a well trodden path so yo may need to go further afield to get some unexplored.
You may consider going 5000ly out to unlock one of the engineers for later.

Do you a have fitting list?

Yes, but I haven't managed to buy it yet, need to find a high tech system!

2D mining laser
D rated core, but 5A FSD and 4A power plant
6A Fuel Scoop
3A AFMU
3E Cargo rack
3D Shield
2G SRV bay
Detail Surface Scanner
Heat sink launcher
add fuel storage to taste

Sexy! Have fun. I’d suggest a 3c bi-weave, though, n also a repair limpet controller.

I LOVED my Asp X n did most of dw2 in it (had to stop due to rl stuff).

But, i really fell in accidental love with a Krait MK II which, out of sheer boredom n for fun, I geared out as a lightly armed explorer with a ship launched fighter n SRV just to get differing perspectives n a bit of a change. it came out great! Now, I really only go into the black in that sweet craft... probably the coffee pot.

Anyway, I’d say just pick a direction, head out, n see what you can find. Get n share plenty of pics, always take an srv for planetside off-road hijinks, n yeah... rl audiobooks. Definitely audiobooks. Allow me to suggest Space Team or Expeditionary Force or the Roak series. I enjoyed them greatly on my last adventure. Welcome to the game... Good luck n have fun!

I'll take a look at those upgrades when I get back. Just finished the CW mapping existing AWs, which at least showed me how to drive the thing. And how briefly it lasts when interdicted by another player! I've moved further down the Orion spiral a kLY to do some real exploring. At least one undiscovered WW mapped, just need to make sure I hand it in while the 3x payout from the CW is in effect.

Make that space money, mate! I hope you are enjoying the grind... I mean game! It's alot of grind but fun things can really happen. Space exploration is great. Realise that this is as close as we'll get in our lifetimes to the real thing and you get to actually do it as though it were rl.

There are some rl bits and pieces (more than you would think) in this game. It really does mirror real life especially in the grind and creating your own experience. You get what you make of it. Ah... the PERSONAL NARRATIVE does reflect the way we shape our actual lives. Your excitement and trail is partially up to you. Some things are out of your control so shape what you can and have fun in here (and RL), Commander!

If you're on Xbox, feel free to find me via Celestial Light Brigade and I'll happily wing up with you and introduce you to some good folks who won't seal club you. Seal Clubbing is what jerk tankers do to noobs and they just straight up murder you and laugh about it. Usually, they strike in the starter system. Ph-k Der Guys!

As for the majority of the Elite community, we'll happily help you get a good start and find fun friends to keep you going. Daily Routine, Inc is also a good community group. DR_Grandreefer helped me get my start and learn the game. He's not a patient teacher (at least I get yelled at alot but I kinda earn it as I forget alot of things he teaches me) but he's a really good guy and a good mentor and will do almost anything to help you improve. Just don't tell him I said that. He and Daily Routine, Inc are also on PC as is Celestial Light Brigade. CLB might also be on PS4... I don't think DRInc is on playstation though. Then there's the AXI crew who hunt Thargoids. I just connected with their discord but they seem a good crew. You can find all of them on Inara (google Inara.cz and send me a message if you like I am there as TODAKUROITORA) and look also on your right-hand panel under Factions. Just type the faction names in and you'll find them. Holler if I can be of any help.

Or like me. Just solo it in open. Lol. It's good you have an objective. May I suggest the crystal forests as a visit too. Max out those hard to get raw mats in one trip.
I'm 6k out heading towards a Triple hotspot I discovered but didn't screenshot ! Grrr.
Fleet carriers are not essential like say, a fuel scoop is, but they are handy to hand in UC data I collect which in turn pays for fc upkeep.
My long term goal is filling my hold with stuff and flogging it. Rinse n repeat. Exploring as l go. Saturation exploring and once I've had my fill I jump 500ly to the next virgin space area.
Exploring is a tad tedious at times but finding workarounds to save time whilst mapping a system like using the orery instead helps.
Also scan those rings. You might find a gem... Triple Ltd or painite etc.
