Beginner Trader, Am I doing it right?

Im currently in Eravate flying a Sidewinder with 6 cargo slots.
I've been trading between Ackerman Market and Cleve Hub, as they are close together in the same system. I on average make 3k per trip so I'm not really getting anywhere.
Any tips??

Stick to trading and missions until you can grab a Hauler, I'd advise moving to rare commodities after that. Lets you explore the galaxy, make profit and get to know many different stations and systems.

Try to find bulletin board missions for trading, will give you more money, and sometimes you don't even have to buy the cargo and/or does not take up cargo space.

And I don't mean this to be sarcastic in anyway, but I found trading to be too much work for me, and I started doing bounties at nav beacons and resource extraction sites and I have made several orders higher more money than I ever would have trading. And it is not nearly as boring, but more risky. However, that's just my play style, yours could be different.

To make money trading you need an investment. A bigger ship to start and also you need operating money to buy cargoes while always keeping enough cash to pay the insurance if need be. Use the basic discovery scanner to make your initial money, it's going to pay better for your time than trading with 6 slots.

Not quite sure how to start doing this
enter system, hit scanner, BWAAAAAAAAAWWWW sound.... sell data in cartographics when at stations. Your beginner scanner has a short range so it does NOT scan an entire system. Just anything within 500Ls I believe...

If you want to maximize your trades, replace everything possible for cargo space - risky, yes, but for a trader running away is better option than trying to fight (and possibly lose valuable cargo). Trade enough to get a Hauler, upgrade it a little, and switch to Adder... and so forth. When you get to Cobra, now... that bird can do many things at the same time without truly sacrificing anything.

Basically fly around to unknown systems, scan their stars and planets and sell the data at stations using the universal cartographers option. (usually the last)

Basic empty systems usually only get you like 600 credits, but some places that have Terran planets will give you a few thousand.

You can also pew pew things at Nav beacons. Pick out sidewinders, eagles and (mostly)harmless cobras and vipers along with the trade ships that are wanted and cash in their bounties. I find bounties are the funnest and most profitable up until you can afford some bigger trade ships.

go the the nav beacon and shoot a couple of npcs with wanted written on them, redeem the bounties at the local station and buy yourself a hauler, in the medium term google rares trading, you'll make a lot of money if you follow that last bit of advice.
