Newcomer / Intro Beginners don't overlook the Adder

I posted a few days ago about trying the Adder instead of the hauler as a jack of all trades.

I tried it, and have fallen in love with my little ship. It is not often commented on (from glances at the forum) but really does allow great flexibility.

I wasn't going to invest too much into her but I think everything has now been upgraded. I have (currently) 18 tons of cargo space 2 gimballed burst lasers and a fixed beam as well as upgraded power plant etc.

She's a lovely little fighter and also can haul a decent cargo too.

If you're a ADD type who doesn't like to stick to one thing for long please try this humble little chap - I think I'll keep her a while now!

i called mine the battle bus after fitting 3 gimbled multi-canons on her :)

i like having a dedicated combat ship and a multi-roll ship. if i was starting over then the adder would be on my short list for multi-roll ships.

Never flown it, but have heard nothing but good things about it. Now put it up against a formidable foe in a better ship... Lets see how it fares.

...And the cost of upgrades and insurance.
yup, the adder is so close to the sidey that if you flog the guns first you'll have enough to get rocking in a stock adder when you buy the guns back. the cobra on the other hand, i held out until i had 600K to buy my cobra (didn't part exchange) and that let me get some comfortable upgrades. i think insurance started at 30K for that and of course has gone up since i've poured more into it

My adder (with a lot of help from the security) just killed an NPC Anaconda :) shuffling various things around shes at 13ly unladen 10 laden 22 tons of cargo space and with 3 weapon mounts packs a punch. The 40,000 bounty has swapped my beam laser for a railgun... Overkill?

This. The Size 4 upgrades for the cobra are the first really expensive stuff you'll probably buy. My Cobra has a much higher value than my Type 6 transporter, and the weapons I have on it are cheap, so that's not where the difference is coming from (4 fixed pulse lasers)

I totally agree with the OP. Just bought my adder yesterday - it is quite nimble, quite fast, quite resistant and can carry around 16t of cargo. Perfect ship for diverse tasks and incredibly cheap for what it can do.

They seem to fly under the radar a little but im loving it. Have the range to pick up missions and the firepower to take down most things. And even my kitted out one still rebuys for 11k - I love it.

Hmmm good to know, thanks for the tip!
.
I dropped my scanner and added a 2T cargo hold on my Sidey and have made a good enough living to upgrade my FSD, Powerplant, Distribution, and pulse lasers. I am in love with it right now as a multi-use little guy. I even got my first kill of an NPC (they were even in a Viper!) last night that interdicted me (usually I just run!). It was exhilarating and frightening both at the same time.
.
I had been pondering when I would try and kit out a hauler, but was leery about any combat capability if I can't run as effectively would my 'techniques' still work? I don't know, but reading about the Adder it may be my next ship!

Hello! Wanted to chime in and also lend my support for the Adder, an excellent little multi-role ship that's versatile and fun to fly, and is a great step toward the Cobra. Had a lot of fun smuggling adventures in mine, and also the first kill after release as well. :)

wish I'd read this before I bought my Hauler.
Just about to embark on a Rares journey (ie go hunting for them to trade).

Would you swap out a hauler for adder for mainly trading?

The Hauler is fine. I got rid of shields and was trading 20T cargo. Worked up to the Type 6 with it.

You can get 18 tonnes of cargo and still keep your shields.

Great little ship, I am using a Cobra now but the Adder got me the credits to do that through trading and a little bit of kill warrant scanning as well.

If all I wanted to do was trade probably not as with the right loadout you can get a fair amount more cargo space - but its a little weak in defence - which concerned me.

I think I've topped the adder at 22 tonnes and kept my shield.. If I lost the shield possibly 24-26 but has 3 gun mounts.

My Adder has a jump range of 17.86 Unladen / 14.62 laden (both from fully fuelled), I fitted a B3 FSD and optimised most of the other modules for lightness, but I still have a D3 shield generator, power-plant, thrusters and sensors, and I have fitted a shield cell bank instead of the discovery scanner, and kitted it out with a max cargo capacity of 16t. With a combination of a pair of gimballed lasers, one burst and one beam in the small slots, an a gimballed multi-cannon in hte medium slot for finishing them off when the shields are down, a kill-warrant-scanner and chaff I can bounty hunt with it, and carry goods across the galaxy. I have one maxed out module, my A2 power distributor, which comes in nice and handy.

I think you could actually get up to 24t of cargo space while keeping your shields, as it has 2 class-3 compartments, 2 class-2 and 1 class-1. If you bought a class-1 shield, put it in the class-1 compartment and then put class 2 and 3 cargo racks in the rest you should have 2 8t racks and 2 4t racks, which is 24t.

Well I am saving my credits and have enough I think to kit out a decent Adder.
.
But, where do I find them? Every shipyard I have been to (some with a very good selection on outfitting) none of them have the Adder in stock?
.
Are they that rare? Empire space only?
.
I am lingering around Sun Takush right now....

You can see a short list of availability here: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Adder

I am just about to buy an Adder myself and I could see one a few minutes ago available in "Beten". Must not be too far from Sun Takush I believe.
