Proposal Discussion Behold - the infidel!

No, this is not about religion, although after reading through alot of posts lately, there are quite some self-proclaimed elite-hardliners out there, ready to set anyone on fire who might dare to break their "immersion" (a word that has been used to mask numerous beatdowns and get away with it unpunished, because of the "you get out of jail free card" effect thats attached to it)

So please, dear commanders - unplug from your Rift for a second.

Is it possible to get a coloured/themed background for what is actually the black nothingness of space in solar-systems? And yes, i've noticed the low-res background thats supposed to be the Milky Way, thats just not enough for me. I feel like catching eye-cancer with all the black and would love to just import some images from eve-online. I know it's a realism-killer, but it would only kill it for me (for i prefer playability, which unfortunately, is a very opinionated experience, over realism)
Is there any workaround?

You do know that those stars are what you'd actually see? It isn't a background, it's a projection based on stars in the database.

Given the feedback so far, i have indeed hit the right spot. But since the majority (according to a poll) of this community has reached their 30's and beyond, im sure theres more to expect than mindless extremist bashing. You seem to interpret that one thing i said about my issues with the background, a negative statement, as something thats true for the whole Game, which i think is pretty amazing so far.

Wrong way to start a post asking for help:

The response has nothing to do with your request, only to do with your combatative tone before you even got to the point. Which wasn't a problem in the least. I chose to ignore the jibe and just respond anyway.

If the post was to deliberately provoke people with your insulting and provocative post then you succeeded, hooray for you. The downside is that anything constructive you were trying to say is now lost.

Sadly I don't have a Rift at the moment...and if I did I would NEVER EVER unplug! :D

Kind of. There will eventually be nebulas generated in the skybox too, but they haven't been implemented yet. Hopefully they will be handled in a realistic manner though and not be overdone like in all other space games ever made. ;)

And yes, i've noticed the low-res background thats supposed to be the Milky Way, thats just not enough for me.

Personally I think it's beautiful, but it is still work in progress and I suspect that will always be the case to some degree.

Don't see how the playability would be improved since the stars are currently real locations that you can see in the sky. When jumping towards a star you first need to align towards it...import an image texture to replace the background would therefore reduce playability if anything since you can no longer see the star.

Is there any workaround?

No.

Elite has been about a realistic view of our galaxy from the beginning. Any hope of changing that is misplaced.

Perhaps you need to leave this place and kickstart your own space game?

I've read this will be changed at some point, to include more details. Yet still remain accurate.

Could you please explain the title of the post, though? I'm interested to know what link it has to your feed-back.

Having a backdrop of real stars that you can visit, and that look correct for your location has been a major selling point from the start, and as far as I know elite is the first actual game to do this(I know programs like space engine have done it in the past)

Therefore your request is unlikely to get much support.

Yes the background could be more interesting. Maybe in the future stuff is different.

The first game to make watching paint dry or grass grow which is all very immersive is not necessarily good or interesting. It prove a point and shows some cleverness but does it entertain or provide something interesting to look at and does it match the splendor of every day British weather?

The real stars background serves a purpose and it's not just a "pretty" backdrop.

For example when you are flying around searching for stars/planets the background will aid you "Did I just see that dot move?!"

I think it will make exploration/locating unknown planets in a system either a lot easier or a lot harder based on your custom background.

So no, I think it's a bad idea.

Thank you all for your honest replies, even those wearing jump boots, ready to kick some "infidel" butt - hence the title. The thing about Nebulas really cheered me up, like those (or is it one?) we can see on startup when the ED logo is shown.

So many thin skinned tenderfoots around here...cowboy up.

Perhaps I'm being obtuse, but can you explain what you're gettting at?

What we have at the moment is a rendition of what the rest of the galaxy would look like, if we were in space.

Are you asking for something that doesn't look like what it should look like, or have I misinterpreted your issue?

I disagree that having a fake backdrop is more interesting than showing what is actually there.
It's like hanging a picture of the grand canyon in front of your window, it might look more spectacular, but that's not why you have a window.

What we see in the startup is obviously just a "photoshop image", but yes. Presumably something in that style. Most likely better looking though with hopefully a bit more detail added in in at least some of them. The cool thing about these in Elite is that you will actually see them change slightly as you jump between systems in the same way all the stars shift according to your location in the galaxy.
