I am sick of the fanbois always excusing the static nature of the game with the "you're one in a million" non-argument. The real word just doesn't work that way. I could instantly make headlines all over the world by running amok on the streets. That's an extreme example but you get what I mean. If I am really determined I can stirr up things.
ED's state of things that even if a group of 1000 elite commanders would team up they would achieve just about NOTHING makes no sense whatsoever. If 100 millionaires would team up in the real world it would make an impact.
I know this is not Eve etc. but Eve actually makes far more sense in the way that dedicated groups of players have actually an impact on the game world. EDs extreme sterility and static universe is neither interesting nor realistic. And seriously, the another excuse that that's how Elite is meant to be doesn't have much merit. Elite was so static in 1984 because it was limited in technology, not because an unmoving universe is the pinnacle of game design. Already in FFE there was a proto-dynamic system visible, by being able to change manipulate the in-game press through your actions.
Having some impact on the universe is no "epic hero" affair. Actually, Elite is far more of an themepark-MMO than Eve or X3 are. You don't have the title of "Master Warrior of Neverwinter" in your game name, but otherwise the missions (the only dynamic in this game) follow exactly the same game mechanic of theme park MMOs: Fetch this from that and have zero influence on the world.
