Being scanned?

So, as I meander around settlements, I'm constantly being scanned. Now, I've got no reason to be concerned, but I also have no idea what the scans will reveal. I mean, if I copy a security profile, will the scan reveal it and get the guards shooting at me? If I'm carrying materials I've lifted illegally, will that be detected and result in the guards shooting at me? If I've collected a doodad for a mission LEGALLY, will that be detected and result in the guards shooting at me?

I've got no idea what the scans will potentially detect.

Is there a list?

Yes scanning will reveal if you are have a copied security profile (which is why there is an option to discard ). It also reveals if you have any stolen goods on your person, if you have any outstanding fines/bounties for that faction, and any contraband goods such as e-breachs, pyrolytic compounds, pathogens or spyware. All these will result in hostile action. Be aware that some retrieval missions involve contraband goods

Retrieval missions that involve contraband goods, while not always obvious that they do in the mission description, thankfully flash a warning on the screen that you're now carrying contraband when you pick up the item. So as long as you're not being scanned as you pick it up, you should at least have enough warning to be ready to leg it.

The scan will reveal:
  • Any illegal items (indicated by the HUD icon in top left, so you know beforehand), for example E-Breach or something mission related.
  • Any stolen GOODS (picked up from lockers with maglock and also indicated by the icon in top left). Note the Assets and Data are OK, they won't be picked up by the scan.
  • Any local faction bounties you have (indicated by the other icon in top left)
  • Any cloned ID (there is a hotkey to erase it immediately)
  • Any bounties in other jurisdictions (but they won't turn hostile for this one, but instead comment something like "I thought Commanders were supposed to respect the law")

I think this is everything.

Sigh. I kind of miss the days when they would publish actual MANUALS for games.

Anyone remember the manual for Falcon 4.0? That was serious business.

Just to add - you can pick up assets (even though they say they are illegal).
If no one saw you taking them then they become clean once they are in your backpack.

Illegal goods stay illegal.

You can download data if it is not marked as an illegal download.

If it is an illegal download (it will be marked as such with an alarm icon) and someone sees you doing it, they will react appropriately.

Kompromat and Smear Campaign Plans are good examples. Not only will you get a negative reaction if you're seen, I also seem to remember it raises settlement alarms.

They have a hidden timer between scan. Essentially, they can only scan you each X period of time, and it seems it's global for all the settlement.
I know now the amount of time, roughly, so when the timer is up, I drop everything illegal, plant myself in front of a guard and wait. I'm clean and the timer is refreshed, I can go again.

Yup, and it varies based on your standing with the faction.

I spent ages trying to trigger a scan at an allied faction, to get the guard close enough to open the door, before I twigged.

I didn't know that - good to know!

I just heard alarms going off and assumed it was the entire settlement. Thanks for the clarification!
Feel free to try - take a covert data retrieval mission, it doesn't fail when the flashing lights start and you can successfully complete if no-one spots you and sets off the actual alarms. or it's broken and I should be failing the missions - who knows at the moment :)
