Newcomer / Intro Being tagged as WANTED after shooting WANTED targets

Hi folks,

I am playing ED 1.1.06 for a while but just today I faced the same issue twice.
After killing several WANTED targets in EVARATE and find another "WANTED" target but his time the I got a bounty on me instead after giving the first shoot. It never happened before because that was a clear shot. the weird thing is that it happened twice in a few hours.
Has someone faced same issues? tks.

Has someone faced same issues?
yeah i had it happen several times myself, but not recently

Which makes no sense.
yeah it does make sense. pirates make themselves obvious by their dialogue and so sometimes it is tempting to open fire on them while the status readout still says 'Scanning' instead of 'Wanted' - in which case you'll be tagged for firing on an innocent.

but what we are talking about here is getting tagged anyway, even after scanning is concluded - and in a couple of my cases even after a KWS or bounty check were concluded too - i still got tagged as Wanted myself.

but as i say, it hasn't occurred to me for a couple of weeks now.

Well, it does really. Shooting before you determine the target's status is indescriminate fire, which is rightly a crime.

Yes but who reports the crime? The wanted criminal?

When I see some unarmed trader fleeing for his life with a cobra firing at it, I get fined if I fire on the cobra before scanning it, which to me makes no sense.

Maybe that traider has a cargo hold full of stolen goods? Maybe the cobra pilot is a bounty hunter? Never shoot before you scan the target.

This happened to me 3 times last night, never happened before.

The first time I was fighting a guy, when he blew up I had a bounty put on me. I thought maybe I'd made a silly mistake. The 2nd time I fired a couple of shots, instant bounty. I looked at his status, it was definitely Wanted now, but maybe it wasn't when I shot? The 3rd time I'm 100% certain he was "Wanted" before I shot. Fired a couple of shots and instant bounty again. (On the plus side, the bounty was 900CR, but I got 11,000CR when the security forces eventually took him down, so it worked out in the end!)

Very annoying though. Is this a bug, or intentional behaviour -"Don't get greedy and just go bounty-hunting"?

Maybe they were wanted in a different jurisdiction than you were in, revealed by your warrant scanner, but still clean in your current jurisdiction?

Ah! That's a very interesting possibility. I always assumed "If they're Wanted, they're fair game", but it might be something like that. That would complicate things quite a bit though - is there some way of checking if they're wanted in this particular system, other than the Wanted tag under their name in the target screen (left side of front-dashboard)?

Wanted under the name is result of the basic scan and means that they are wanted in the current lawful system.... (In anarchy systems all are clean after basic scan) You can fire on them.... If clean after basic scan in a lawful system, you will be fined if you fire on them even if kws shows wanted in other systems... Note you have to scan in anarchy systems to receive bounty ..

Is there a way to tell, with the kws that they are wanted elsewhere? I mean before you destroy them and get credited with the kill? Its probably obvious but I've never seen it show up.

the only way I can think of Minkey... is to check Contacts after the initial scan... and note the bounty ... THEN scan with KWS and re-check... however this will NOT give the breakdown... ie Empire/Alliance/Federation/local Faction

Tis all I can think of mate :(

Sorry I think my question might be even more stupid than it seems. If I'm in system A and the person I scan is wanted in system B, does it show up in contacts that they are wanted somewhere? Even if I doesn't tell you where that is. As far as I can tell, and I might just have scanned the wrong people, I get people who are wanted in the system I'm in, or they show up as clean.
The kws only tells me they were also wanted in other places and only after I've destroyed them.

Sorry if you just explained that and I misunderstood. It has been a long day.

Let me see if I understood you. Seems you are asking for the following: if the NPC is clean in system A but wanted in system B a KWS will still keep his status as clean (because you are in system A), but the info panel in contacts will show an outstanding bounty.

That particular piece threw me off once or twice when I was checking the faction on an NPC and it showed decent size bounty. I fired and got tagged with a bounty myself.

Thanks guys. I think I have derailed the thread a bit. Sorry OP.
Looks like I need to check that contacts screen more closely in future.

If it says wanted under the name after a basic scan means wanted in current system..... Kws shows if they are wanted in other systems and displays total bounty... You don't see which individual factions /systems wanted them til you kill them ...( also kws scans for extra bounty in current system ) ....I think ...!
