Best Choice for a 2nd Car?

Hi All,

I have been hauling in my modified Hauler for a while now grinding and I have amassed around 250k Creds so far. I am looking for a new Ship, one that I can bounty Hunt and explore with.

I was thinking about a Viper as they are around 145k and I could buy some kit and weapons. I wondered what everyone else though before I spend my hard won money where my mouth is.

I'd suggest selling the Hauler and getting a Cobra - it's better for exploration due to its better FSD capabilities and you wont really need the Hauler anymore if you fit the cobra for cargo.

I'd suggest the Viper if you were primarily after bounty hunting, but since you want to do both in it, get a Cobra. And on a side note: If you decide to go for the Viper, I'd suggest not doing it unless you have 500k credits for some basic upgrades and insurance.

Don't get me wrong - I have a Viper as a second ship and I love it, but I use it exclusively for combat and some smuggling.

you should not listen to them, just buy a cobra it is as strong/fast as a viper and can do everything else

And turns like a brick. It has stronger armour and hull but viper has better shields and a much better turn rate. Also its top end speed is higher than the cobra.

the weapon grouping on the viper is near perfection. the cobra is really wide so i've got gimbles on my tier 1 which are on the bottom of the wing tips.

i feel the cobra pulls up faster, but the viper yaws at a much better rate. didn't realise how much i was using yaw for manoeuvring as opposed to just fine aiming until i got in my cobra for the first time!

if you just want to bounty hunt i'd say keep the hauler and buy the viper as a second ship (it's no good for exploring). the bounties will quickly pay for upgrades and will make pulling the cash in for a cobra much quicker.

then, you can have both! (and also a backup ship in case you wind up with heavy losses and can't afford the insurance on the viper of cobra)

Thanks Guys!

I didn't realise that I was so close to a Cobra! Will have to save hard and have plenty for the insurance plus cargo initially. I won't want to go hunting in it initially as I won't want it scratched.

You're not close to a Cobra if you want to equip it - you'll need probably twice the price of the ship itself.

I'd go for an Adder - it's like a bigger Hauler that can actually hold its own in combat, and with much more upgrade potential. And it only costs 87.000!

Isn't an out-of-the-box Cobra better equipped as a moderately updated Hauler/Adder?
We're not talking about fully kitted ships here.

I mean, if you go with the Adder then you need to invest a big chunk into a decent FSD to be even equal to an Cobra, or am I wrong?

Cobra gets my vote ... I've one almost fully upgraded (worth 4.5m) sitting in dock as second ship and bounty hunter if i need it whilst I progress with my Type 6.

I play the game a lot more relaxed knowing I have a very capable Cobra as a fallback plan.

I love the Viper, but I think some of you are forgetting the size of the fuel tank. It's pretty impractical for anything other than short system hopping. Go with the Cobra if you want a jack of all trades.

You really need both a Cobra and a Viper, the Cobra for doing everything well and the Viper for excelling at dogfighting, as previous posts have said the weapon grouping on the Viper is superior so you can use fixed weapons rather than gimbals.
Tried a Viper a few days ago and you're looking at least 500k do get it fairly sorted, it succeeded in a Fed Navy mission against a Dropship where the Cobra (around 1 mil build) had failed, I intend to get another one but I do think you need an all rounder like the Cobra to generate the credits.
