I just came back from a 3 month exploration trip and I wanted to do some Empire rank grinding, but was is currently the best spot to do this? I don't mind if it's just transporting data from A to B and vice versa as long as it works

Probably still the Ngalinn - Mainani run. Stack up on data courier missions. It's even moderately profitable

Although the chances of the imps winning (and therefore awarding the rank of King to the top 10 players) are slim, to say the least.
well, but following the CG text, 2 ranks for top 25% should still be awarded or 1 rank for top 75%, no matter whether they win. it will be sure a very fast way for one or two of the higher ranks.
I just started this method last night. It's still very effective.
I guess I will be doing this with my cargo Python. Buying some goods and sell them to the other station and getting some extra credits, next to grinding the Empire rank.
I gave this a go this morning for a couple of hours. Went from Lord to Earl. Got me some permits shackamoou !

Mainani/Ngalinn is the best for Imp rank. Took me two days to get to the King and made substantial amount of credits. It is actually nice run, quick, easy. Remember it is only MEDIUM landing pad available there and from time to time you get "docking request denied" if some NPC is sitting on the pad...
Sorry that would be playing the game and grinding seems to be much better.

I thought you would have ranked up already flimley. Do you play Iron Man mode?
Alternative method: Forget about useless data missions. Instead, find a station that offers profitable Get Commodity and Mining missions (e.g. gold, silver, palladium, trituim). Then choose the Reputation mission rewards to rank up while earning credits. With this method, I can earn 300-500M in a weekend. By adding my alts to the wing missions, I can earn 1B in a weekend, all while ranking up!
Perhaps not the best, but i accidentally levelled up to Marquis doing Robigo passenger missions while grinding credits to fuel my carrier. Only one of the factions are empire though, so you'd want to favour their missions over the others where possible for fastest progress. And of course, its one of the best sources of making money in the game.
Yes - about a million credits of bonds should convincingly get top 75%, so throwing that in on top of whatever other rank work is being done this week should definitely be worthwhile.
Top 25% is more like 5 million credits, so you'd probably have to like CZs for that. But still probably quicker than any other approach once you're looking at getting the final two ranks.
After reaching admiral some time ago. I just never really bothered with the empire rank. But you know, there’s no hurry.
