Best ever PC games ever created ever thread.

Curious as to what you guys think are the best ever PC games? You can list 1, 3, 10, 100 or as many as you like. You can give reasons for why you believe they are the best games as well, up to you.

Also if you add your age it would be cool, but obviously not a requirement!

I'm not going to add my own list - right now - as I don't want to influence other people's choices. Cheers!

  • Xcom
  • Wing Commander
  • X-wing VS Tie Fighter
  • Tie Fighter
  • Privateer
  • Strike Commander
  • Sid Meier's Pirates
  • Master of Orion
  • Laser Squad Nemesis
  • Diablo II
  • Elite Dangerous

Edit: I'd guess that, all told, those games ate at least a year of my life. MOO almost ate a year on its own. I still remember some of the epic battle-fleet engagements I had like they were yesterday...

The worst game I ever played was Avalon Hill's B-1 Nuclear Bomber. That was amazingly worse than terrible. Perhaps it's the sole reason I am impatient with people complaining about game-play: I have experienced a game that I wouldn't play if I was paid a high salary to do it.

Hard to pick but here we go:

-Mass Effect 1/2: my best sf RPG experience so far - I just love the characters and I already have multiple playthroughs after me. I dont think I will ever get bored with those games.
-Alien: Isolation: it's a truly a piece of art among the games, a great gaming tribute to one of the best SF horror movies in a history.
-DooM 3: its not getting old, it plays absolutely perfect, it's a hard old school FPs that I can play over and over again.
-Dead Space 1: One of the best horror/action games I've played. The sound, monsters and level design is spot on and creates very unique spooky atmosphere through the entire game.
-EVE Online: Its my second life. Not much to add - best mmo of all time.
-Dark Souls 1: Very dark, very difficult and very challenging game. But really amazing in every aspect. It's a experience.
-DCS - best modern combat flight sim at the moment. Years of good flying in this one.
From the older titles I also have to put Planet of Death here - I played hell out of this game and I loved every minute of it.
and also:
-Elite from 1984 - I grew up with this stuff, no need to say more :)

In no particulat order:

Any Sierra Game, not just Leisure Suit Larry. Sierra were fundimental in showing that a business computer could actually have games.

Doom, a gaming legend and I still remember the impact this game had at the time.
Quake/Unreal, I still remember fighting with two PCs to establish a LAN in DOS (for one of them at least).
Half-Life, A.I that still beats the stuffing out of 'modern' games.
E : S Daggerfall, played this in a period of my life that was mine, the sheer amount of time I spent on this one single session. Yes, we are talking 24 hour + sessions; don't ask.
Ulitma 7, utter joy to play "AVATAR! Knooowwwww that Britaniaaaa..."
X-Wing/Tie-fighter, sorry but no game has come close to the pure epicness of these games for space combat.
Command and Conquer, always prefered these to 'Craft' games.
Wing Commander, Ginger Lynn Allen, I was young and you are probaly still too young BUT, movie cut-scenes man!!!!1!
Planescape: Torment, no rpg has ever come close this game.

As with others, I'm sure there are 100s of games I'm forgetting, but this will do for my part.

Doom - Such a surprise when I hit the forward button and the location wasn't a step change
Quake, QuakeWorld, Quake 2
Smash TV - dare I say better than Robotron 2084?
The Secret of Monkey Island - Look behind you! A three-headed monkey!
Sam n' Max
Unreal Tournament - Still play it on a LAN to this day
Anachronox - One of the funniest stories ever. A real forgotten gem

Planescape Torment - Brilliant Story

Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss - Just stunning barrelling though the tunnels
System Shock 2 - I'll tear out your spine
Avalon - A text-based multi-user dungeon
Mercenary, Damocles - Almost as good as Elite

Best PC games ever. Tough one. Played a hell of a lot. Many of them.. less than great, but you stick with it because.. you just do.

The Witcher 3. The Wild Hunt.
Skyrim - only if it's modded to hell and back.
Everquest. Pre all the instancing.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
Freespace/Freelancer - one of them, always get them mixed up.

Edit:

Half-Life.

For me The Witcher 3 gets so many things right in the RPG genre. Depth of characters in the game simply puts all other games to shame. That alone is enough, but it gets everything else nigh on perfect a well.

Vanilla Skyrim is in abomination. It's a buggy, glitchy horrid creation. Step in the modder community and the game becomes infinitely more playable.

Evercrack, as it was known at the time, used some form of mind control on you. You sat there for just an hour, but when you look at the time somehow or other... ten hours have gone! Temporal Theft! A hard game, tough game. Dying costs you dearly.

Nuclear wasteland? Check!
Mutants? Check!
Hazardous environment? Check!
Deadly enemies? Check!
Lots of weapons? X
Lots of ammo? X
Chances of surviving? X

STALKER wasn't perfect. But it was the only game in years to make me jump out of my seat. Pro tip: Animals can see better than you at night. Expect to get jumped on, swiped at, bitten, or just splatted. Or shot. Damn perfect sighted guards.

Half life first and foremost was the first game to suck me into the plot. In such a way that I was gordon, at least at the start. panic. run. panic panic panic. Run. hide. What the hell is that...on my face? Aarrrggghhhhh! run run run run run run.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

That was a (potentially) awesome game, had heaps of fun with it - but back then on SLI GT660's there was a completely unavoidable crash about 45 minutes playtime in, no matter what you did :( I might try to find it on GOG or something and try again. Skyrim is also a great game. Witcher 3, urm, thumbs down from me - but plenty other people like it :)

So impossible, depending on mood and day ill probably give different answers.

Right here and now, though, one of my most amazing gaming experiences was finding this little free game that came with starsiege, called Starsiege: Tribes.

It was...amazing. It was so original and just vastly different from everything else available.
And designed entirely for multiplayer!

Just amazing and one of the most important games in history.

Some great games in amongst all that. It's interesting to see the similarities and differences here from the "best ever games" lists you see from other sources. Of course it's not surprising to see so many space-themed games here. One or two I've checked out after reading about in this thread though, cheers and keep them coming!
