Best Graphics Card

I love Elite, I was an avid fan of the original and have been enjoying the Alpha/Beta programs. I will be buying an Oculus Rift set when they go on general release.

I currently have i7 3.33Ghz PC (24Gb ram) running windows 7 64bit. I have 2x 1080p monitors which support DVI and configured as dual head. I would love to hear recommendations for upgrading my graphics card to get the best out of Elite without replacing my monitors or losing my dual head functionality for day to day work. I also want the new card to support the Oculus Rift set (I don’t know much about Oculus Rift) so the card would need to support DVI-D/HDMI.

Any suggestions?

I can run maxed out and haven't noticed any significant slowdown on three screens with a GTX 770 4GB, I assume anything better would perform better.

Currently, money is no object, I'd say AMD 295X2.

On a more reasonable level, a 780TI or a custom 290X.

That in the high cost segment, ofc.

well I run a GTX 760 and all is well :D

Personally I rate Nvidia of ATi.

If I had the dosh I would be looking at the Titan's

To get the most out of the DK2, frontier were running a titan and achieving 75+ fps...
I have personally gone with the 780 ti and hope to run the DK2 at optimum speed.
That said, my MSI laptop runs the DK1 quite happily at 60+ fps on a GTX 780m
:)

Which GPU do you already have? Which PSU do you have? This affect on what can we suggest you. If you have something equal to GTX770 or GTX780, R9 280 or R9 290 you should wait until the next generation is released. If you only wait of OR consumer version then it is too early to upgrade in order to prepare for it as OR CV should be expected in about 1 year. So it is no sense to prepare for it already. If rumours are correct then next gen 20nm NVidia GPUs should be way more powerful then current gen. Take into account that OR CV might require stable 95+fps. In this case it is better to wait for the final release of ED in order to test the GPU performance.

Thanks

Thanks for the great responses, sorry for not replying sooner but I have had the norovirus all week and have therefore been out of circulation.
Currently I have an AMD Radeon HD 5700 graphics cards which is getting a bit long in the tooth. I will review all your great recommendation.
Cheers

Norovirus aaaah! That's ****ty man.

I have a GTX780 and I highly recommend it. The Ti version came out like a day after I bought mine and it's a little stronger, but this card plays really well.

Do you get 60fps in stations and in asteroid belts / rings?

Perhaps wait for the future generation of Maxwell (NVidia 880) ?

Yeah, i'll most likely be using a GTX 750 Ti, as i'm into low power usage (plus decent performance) unless the new Maxwell versions are as good in the thermals, and if so i'll probably be using one of the faster models.

As other have said, ED is not that GPU intensive so if you are getting acceptable performance already wait. No one is sure atm what you will need for the consumer version of OR but for good gaming at 75 FPS its expected to be high, so the longer you can wait the better.

I had to get a new one recently and chose a MSI R9 270X which is playing everything really well but i will up grade for the OR and sell or gift the 270X

As others have said the Tom's Hardware graphics card pages are really useful.

Once Nvidia's new cards come out then I expect the market will change quite a bit, and hopefully some of the other cards will get cheaper.

I'm hanging in with a HD5770 and it plays pretty ok, I'm holding out until the new cards come out and for when we get a clearer idea of what will be required to run Elite with the Oculus Rift.

If things are desperate you could always consider the GTX750 Ti, it uses the new architecture, has low power consumption and might keep its value better once the new cards come out. Hopefully someone can chime in and qualify that statement if I'm speaking rubbish!
