Best Graphics Space Sim like elite?

Hi, normally i don't care about graphics in games much, i still play Duke Nukem 3d online. I think the mechanics, balance and features of the games are far more important. But with space sims i think graphics are really important because the whole point is exploring and seeing the beauty of universes and star systems. I googled Best space sim and freespace 2 open source came up so I'm downloading it now but they say its for combat. Is there any good modern space sim like elite in the sense its procedural based that has very good graphics. Key features i like are huge galaxies with tons of stars and planets, and MAINLY being able to land on planets and roam around. I tried that elite FFE Russian mod and it upped the graphics quite a bit but its still not modern enough for me. Infinity looks promising but its been in development for like what 6 years now? Thanks in advance.

Some Ideas

Hi cj31387

A space sim with good graphics and planetside wanderings?

You might like to try The Precursors. Here is the web site http://www.precursors-game.com/

Also patches (both official and un-official) for the game can be found here http://spacesimcentral.com/downloads/ft2.php?dir=/Precursors

To buy the game have a look here http://www.ozon.ru/context/detail/id/4822631/
You might need a translation program though! :S

There is also Parkan II, info here http://uk.gamespot.com/pc/sim/parkan2/index.html

And for a download, here http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-PARKAN2/parkan-2

or here

http://www.game.co.uk/Games/PC-Games-and-Downloads/Simulation-Life/Parkan-2/~r338234/

Game.co.uk lists this as £19.99, but when I bought it the actual price was £7.99. I guess they didn't update their web site or maybe I got lucky....:S

Also, there is Salvation Prophecy http://www.salvationprophecy.com/index.php

I have been waiting for news on this as it is still in development

If you like Freespace Open, you might want to try The Babylon Project total conversion http://babylon.hard-light.net/

Also you should have a look at the open source Pioneer game http://pioneerspacesim.net/about
No planetary excursions as yet in the game, but new features are being added all the time, so maybe in the future? A new Alpha release is due out soon too.

Finally for a full on Elite re-make, there is always Oolite http://www.oolite.org/

Wow, that Precursors looks really good. Kind of a Privateer/KOTOR lovechild.

Have you played it? Is it as good as it looks?

And there is no link to download or buy - strange?

WOW!!! a beautiful space Sim with planet landing and even FPS MODE!!!? Precursors looks awesome. definitely gonna check that out Thanks

Ah, I am glad you turned up Spacegamer, you know a heck of a lot more than I do about The Precursors . And yes do check the SSC thread, good advice :)

I played the precursors after hearing good things about it on the SSC.
My 2p: * NOT a space*sim*
* Not spacelike in any way
* Not a lot of fun
* Cannot in any way shape or form be compared to Elite or any other *true* spacegame.

Its kind of like a poor mans Mass Effect, so if you really liked those then you might like Precursors.
Although I did really like Mass Effect and was totally unimpressed by the Precursors. :S

So... If you want a traditional Space Game, it is not for you. Its an action-adventure with RPG elements set in a world less plausible and less impressive than Mass Effect.

But I am a harsh critic :) Actually I feel I'm just objective and tell it like it is ;)

Well Pioneer is essentially a re-make of old-school Frontier but with better graphics and modern ideas, although its still Alpha, I would recommend it. AFAIK its the only game in the world that offers the same features that the original Frontier games offered.

Although Im probably biased as I work on the game. ;)

orbiter 2010 is pretty good.
Agreed, I loved this and have wasted a heck of a lot of time playing with it :D But it is a pure sim with next to no real gameplay.
FYI, Artlav, a guy heavily involved with the Orbiter scene, is creating his own game based on Orbiter... So the ultra realistic feel with a whole galaxy to explore and trade in, but like Pioneer it is still very much unfinished. Its called Spaceway.

i tried spaceway but i crashes my graphics card display drivers everytime i try to run it. It seems like a great idea though. i could see orbiters' MFDs just before it crashes. I have been getting back to orbiter after a long time, there are so many ad-ons for it and what i like to do is scenarios. although the gameplay is pretty much open ended like a sim you can still download or make your own scenario missions. the UCGO mothership seems pretty good although i havent tried it much yet.
Here's a movie i found on youtube which is awesome about orbiter:
