Best Oculus Rift + HOTAS Controls setup

Since there is no thread about different setups with the Oculus Rift and controllers, I am starting one. Please share yours as well.

Note. After reviewing a lot of options, I decided to go with this HOTAS controller because it is this joystick that's rendered in game...

Saitek X52 PRO

Here is my Oculus Rift +Saitek X52 Pro Controls setup. It works pretty well to do everything you need without messing up (like pushing the engine boost button by accident :)) I have still plenty of buttons to use but I don't think I am missing anything, so it will be version 1.0 - I have still to implement different modes that can be programmed (nav, combat, landing, mining, etc) but that'll be for version 2.

Here you go (TM Hotas Warthog - Yaw is on the pedals):

I'm using a CH flightstick Pro on the right (Need to get a combat stick at some point) and a CH Pro Throttle on the left.

Saitek Rudder pedals for yaw

I gotta say, the analog thumbstick on the pro throttle is amaaazing for vertical and horizontal thrust. I do all my docking FA off and it's so smooth.

Also, I keep an XBOX 360 controller handy for the galaxy map, and actually have a few other things bound to it (landing gear, cargo scoop, sensor zoom, throttle 'trim') so it works out kinda like an extra button box.

CH Products Fighterstick and Pro Throttle

I am using the analogue mouse controller on the throttle for yaw, it's precise and works very well, no pedals needed.

Just got my X55 today, sitting on my desk here at the office... can't wait to leave this world behind and fly off into the sun(set). :)

How is that X52 PRO layout compare to X52?
Do you use voice attack?
If so, how do you coop with voice comm / voice attack?
How do you type messages on keyboard if not using voice chat?

I use an X55 Rhino and pro flight pedals and I can attest to the fact that you should set up your HOTAS to whatever feels comfortable to you. It took me a couple of days to fine tune my setup.

As far as Voice Attack, it is a necessity, especially in VR. As far as typing out to other pilots, have no fear, for dictation is on the list of future improvements for VA. To talk to others, just create a macro that either toggles the listener responses on/off, or set it to use a different profile with no macros in it.

<say> Voice attack off </say>
Go to profile Off

in this Off profile, have 1 macro:

<say> Voice attack on </say>
Go to profile Elite Dangerous

I was also thinking about getting a Hotas and was wondering if the Normal Saitek X52 was fine or should i spring for the X52 Pro? Is there any real difference like buttons or is it just material qualities?

Dual Wielding Space Ship Ninja!

ok, well, more like Ninja-in-training............ but dual wielding nonetheless!

PS: I spent all day at work today putting together this layout, unbeknownst to my boss of course!

PPS: Still working on integrating DragonNS 12, currently it interrupts Elite, as if I were alt-tabbing.

have to second you on that :)

I´m using the pro throttle and the quality is just amazing..you just feel the quality of the switches. also using thumbstick for thrusters and it´s just wow...the amount of fine control I mean. Unfortunately I don´t have room for Pro Pedals so I make do with the Thrustmaster 16000 for yaw/roll/turn .

Originaly I was going to get a x52 but got the pro throttle and T16000 way cheaper. last week at my local electronics store they had a x52 demo unit and I´m so glad that I didn´t go that route..just feels so cheap compared to CH stuff. .. now please make a flght stick with a turn axis! :D

The X52 pro's stick feels a lot sturdier and stiffer but the standard model is also very good. There are a few differences on the throttle part, but I tried both, and didn't find the cost of the pro to be worthwhile. They are also coloured differently, in case that's a big thing! I found no issues whatsoever with using the standard version for Elite: Dangerous. I would not shun anyone paying extra for the pro, but don't feel like it's a must-have, so the choice is yours, I'd say.

As far as Voice Attack, it is a necessity, especially in VR.

I think "necessity" is a matter of preference. I have not yet found a need for voice commands personally, but that's not to rule out "each to their own". With an X52 you have enough buttons, dials, axes and doodads to cover pretty much everything. With a different stick? Maybe not!

Pretty much - I'm sure it's a great piece of software for some and definitely improved over MS gamevoice ~15 years ago. However, my warthog has enough switches and buttons for ED whilst still leaving free switches for mp3 controls, screenshots, video recording switches etc... Moreover I hate playing with headphones (I want the subwoofer to shake my bowel when throttling up and punch it when boosting) and constantly bellowing commands at my computer may prove really exhausting - not to mention that I listen to music whilst playing and I'd hate to lose my ship because some songs lyrics contain the word 'boost' at the wrong moment (even with ptt).

To each his own, but a necessity? No.

Agreed, it is possibleto fly fine without voice attack. I also usually have music on, phones or speakers, but the good lady watching movies on her PC in the right hand seat is also a factor... ;

+1 for the CH Pro Throttle unit. Thumbstick is great for side thrusters. I have the front three finger buttons as thrust forward/back and occ rift orientation reset leaving 16 more hat switch buttons for:
Front hat: landing gear, cargo scoop, hardpoints, heatsink
8-way hat: target ahead, hostile closest/next/previous
top hat: supercruise, hyperdrive, target subsystem next/previous
bottom hat: galaxy map, 0% speed, reverse thrust toggle, silent running

Right hand is an old logitech extreme 3D pro. Roll, pitch and yaw but with roll on the twist.
Hat switch for system power settings and UI navigation
Four top switches for weapon select, boost and UI panels and select.
A couple more buttons would be nice but it works fine as-is.

Sometimes use a cheap 3-switch pedal unit for boost/stop/reverse.

Galaxy map uses the joystick for pitch and yaw, CH throttle thumbstick for translation.

Headlook is a DK2.

Sometimes move my hand to find the escape key or mouse when I can't be bothered scrolling a menu but that's it.

At first I thought using the pedals as the throttle was odd, but it works in cars!

I didn't start with Throttle on feet; intially I had Yaw on feet, as is the norm for atmospheric aircraft, but since my T16000 is a twist stick I found myself inclined to use it for Yaw.
I was left with a very expensive set of pedals that were unused..... then it dawned on me, like you said 'it works in cars', so I gave it a try and it actually feels pretty natural for me.
Everyone is different though and that's why this thread is important. Looking at other people's setups may help some think outside the box and improve their own setup.
Cheers,
