Best place to buy PC copy?

Hm. If I have both basic Elite and also Horizons bought via Steam, would I he okay to buy a potential season 3 from Frontier's store and get it to Steam?

Hey all,

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong place. I considered putting into the support section but none of the ticket headers fitted.

Anyway, simple question really - where would you recommend buying the PC copy of the Commander's Edition from? I've noticed the game's sold at Amazon, on Steam, from the Frontier store etc. but also read that people have had issues with Steam copies/activating the game via Steam.

Any recommendations?

(Again, apologies if in wrong section).

Steam works every time. Plus you can refund if you play for less than 2hrs and don't like it.

Win win.

Another advantage of buying direct from FD is that other family members can play titles in your Steam account while you are playing Elite through the family sharing option as you are not using it. We use this a lot.

Not true.

You still use the game launcher when you play through steam.

Just set it to not remember your password and nobody else can play even if you have family sharing on.

Thing is, you can play and even install steam version perfectly fine without steam. You will still have to create account on FD site even if you buy it in steam, and can download launcher from there if you want to. There is basically no difference between game bought in steam and on FD site, both can be installed both ways.
Personally i prefer it to be installed via steam, because of autoupdate and much better download speeds.

Totally true, We use it regularly.

The whole point of my post was NOT to buy through Steam but the FD store instead so Steam has absolutely nothing to do with my version of Elite.

I shut-down Steam and play Elite, My nephew can then play most of my Steam games without issue.

I would always recommend getting something off of Steam when the option is there. If frontier's servers are down, everyone is affected, but if you have it on steam, I guess connection problems with them could also be an issue (uncertain about that, as I don't have it on steam).

That being said, I am grateful it is on Steam... otherwise I would not be aware of ED's existence in the first place.

But the main thing for me is, getting it from FD means fewer potential issues as fewer organisations are involved. Also, as others have said, it benefits the developers too, so better for everyone.

If frontier servers are down then like you say, everyone is affected. You still connect to the FD servers regardless of where you bought the game.

If you live overseas I say go for the Steam version because they have servers on every region.

Frontier servers aren't bad but they overload when there's a big patch being released.

I have frontier store version because i bought before elite was in steam. But i would buy steam version over frontier store version because steams refund policy and no one should buy from place that doesn't offer easy refunds. Also download times for updates/patches from steam are much lower for many people.

I did Steam like I do for all my PC games. They are the only ones who have any payment data and even then I pay through another service. That's one of the main benefits of Steam -- One account associated with payment details instead of multiple ones.

I use steam.

But.

It's only because they sell steam wallet cards at Tesco.
And i work there. So I get 10% off. Lol
Sometimes 20%. :D

I know. I'm cheap.

Sorry FD. :p

You can always hire me. I have no useful dev skills, but I can throw out endless ideas ranging from utterly useless, to quite brilliant!
