Best post 1.1 Cobra combat setup

Hi there.,

I was wondering what would be the best combat cobra modules and weapons loadout now.

Thanks,

What do you want to do with it? Fight? Trade? Mine? PvP? PvE? Are you a good shot/good pilot or do you need to rely on gimbals? There's a lot of variables to consider (not least of which what kind of powerplant and power distribuor you can afford).
It'll boil down to personal preference in the end. I don't think there's one, best loadout

You need a fair amount of cash. A-class on Power Distributor, Shields, Sensors. Military hull. A-class Shield Cells Make sure you have enough power. For weapons, the BIG C2 Cannons do by far the most damage, but you need to time your shots well. Go for Multi-Cannons if you're not adept at keeping your target in the sights for more than 300ms at a time! :) Some people say small Pulse LASERs, but I tend to favour small Beams, and manage my heat by "pulsing" when I fire. That way if I get a good run at the target, or for the killing shot, I can hold down both fire buttons and let the reload/heat stuff take care of itself with 3/4 pips to WEP.

Roughly, you need 6 million for all of that.

EDIT: A-class Thrusters too! And A-class Power Plant for that weapon loadout. Still, a formidable versatile fighter if you can afford it.

I was having a lot of success with:
1 x Medium Fixed Beam
1 x Medium Gimballed MC
2 x Small Gimballed MC

With an A-module Power Distributor, 3 pips to weapons will let you burn down nearly any shield with the laser. When you switch to the MCs you can then steal 1 precious pip from weapons to use elsewhere depending on what you're fighting.

Hahahaha! Makes my first trading run's profit of $700 feel somewhat paltry. Ah noobs, what what you all do without them eh?

Current balance: $2407

Congrats! Now keep grinding! Once you get your Cobra you will start to feel better and then......well let's wait and see ;)

Step 2. Complain about power and heat management

...

dunno, i don't have power nor heat management issues on my viper.....

hunting sidewinders at RES / Nav beacon can net you better $$ than this, usually a sidewinder is 1k to 3k cr., and they are doable with the stock sidewinder, then once you upgrade it, you can start taking on cobras (not all, be picky) which will net you between 5 and 30k (well you might have trouble with the 30k ones tho)

I was having a lot of success with:
1 x Medium Fixed Beam
1 x Medium Gimballed MC
2 x Small Gimballed MC

I've got small gimballed (1 x MC + 1 x Beam) and medium fixed (1 x MC + 1 x Beam). The thinking behind this is Beams for shields (on Fire 1) and then bring in the MC's too (Fire 2) once shields are down. The brunt of my firepower is fixed (my aim's not bad and fixed == more damage) but I've gone for gimballed smalls 'cos my aim's not perfect and it's nice to keep landing hits even when I'm slightly off target.

My only concern now is that, because the small Cobra mounts are underneath, and because I'm often in a pitch-up loop behind my target, are those gimballed weapons landing hits or are they obscured by the front of my own ship?

Anyone got any thoughts?

Surprisingly I went back to my Beta setup and it works great for me. C2 Cannons, C1 Burst Lasers all gimbaled. A class modules of course.

The bottom gimbals are obscured. You have to plan your weapon placement for the type of dogfighting maneuvers you use. If you constantly adjust throttle/boost and use down thrusters to win turning battles, then you need gimbals (or turrets, if they were better) on top and fixed on bottom. If you do long range jousting and are good at keeping your target in crosshairs while flying with Flight Assist off, then fixed long range weapons are better, generally.

Nose up for effective use of those small hardpoints. That's all.

If the target is above about the middle of the screen, then the lower mounts are obscured. But the gimballed MC will NOT fire in that case. If you want to be sure, try putting a different fire group in with the two MCs on 1 and 2, and you can "play" to see when you're actually getting hits. With every button pushed on LASERs and MCs, it's hard to tell what's donig the damage! I find that having the throttle in the upper part of the blue gives me an advantage when pitch-up chasing, although you need to turn the hardest. It takes, and always has taken, much more practice and skill to follow pitch-down, especially as you lose the target when it's obscured by the sensor panel in the cockpit. And we don't have meaningful yaw, so just play with different throttle settings until you get good at following the ship "up"

i have gone class 2 beams up top with class 1 gimballed cannons on the wings

Sheilds melt and then you have the accuracy to take out modules easily

A for power dist and sensors
B for everything else to keep cost down
military armour a must as is chaff
