Best processor for performance in VR with 1080ti?

So, I may have underestimated the value of a new processor with my 1080ti. From the research I did previously it looked like my 4790 wouldn't really bottleneck it (and for almost every other game, that'd be right), but from the reports of others with the same card it looks like I could be getting much better performance in Elite VR with a 7700 or better, especially if I overclock both...

Just to clarify I'm not looking for value for money here, I'm aiming mostly for performance, though I'd stop short of spending hundreds or thousands for 1-2%!

So...thoughts?

I have just got an i7 8700k which should oc to about 5ghz relatively easy.
I haven't yet but I am still testing the rig.

The difference in project cars isn't as prevalent as with others like Elite dangerous where my GPU utilisation jumped nearly 30%.
But I definitely notice an increased smoothness.
£1500 worth, not too certain but i have no regrets.
Ok I bought a brand new rig except for the gpu.

Compared to the i7 7700k it has two additional cores and hyperthreading for twelve threads total.
Maybe not a huge deal yet but games are starting to become truly multithreaded these days so 50% more CPU for what is £90 additional, the i7 7700k has naturally dropped in price.

But the new CPU requires a different chipset, z370 only.
If you are on a 4790k as I was you will need a new motherboard and ddr4 RAM anyways.
So why not get the newest.
And don't underestimate RAM speed as well in VR so I went 3200mhz RAM.

ok I answered that as if I was on the other forum.

cell phones.

Try glancing over this thread.

If your going to buy now go for new tech. I7 4770k 4.4Ghz DDR3 2400 to I7 8700k 5.0Ghz DDR4 3000. Same 1080ti gives a much improved experiance. Well worth it. It's 4 generations newer (CPU) 2 more cores and can clock a lot higher it really out classes Haswell. Gameplay is much smoother and 90FPS is rock solid where the older cpu struggled in a few cases.
