PvP Best response?

Ganking is, I believe, fun. It's not something I would do - mainly because I'm the one who'd end up with the re-buys.

But, it can't be much fun for the attacker if his (her?) quarry can't defend properly.

So, how do I give my attacker a more interesting time, when I'm a trader (combat rank - Novice) who has just been pulled out of supercruise in an overweight Asp X, and he's Elite and flying a Vulture?

Have a high wake on hot key. Decent shields, FA off, boost, swerve until jump ready.

On an AspX... 4X small G5 rapid fire seeker missiles with thermal cascade (possibly 1 FSD interupt). Submit to the interdiction quick FA flip to face your attacker boost toward them and unleash missiles as fast as possible! If you have them, add a couple packhounds in the medium slots (hi cap or rapid fire, again thermal cascades) - release the hounds!

Yes. I like this too.[yesnod]

No hardpoints on a trader. There is nothing you can do in a trading ship to fight an engineered PvP ship. Nothing. Your goal is to defend and escape. That means tough shields, point defence, and at least one module reinforcement because your shields may still drop and you don’t want your thrusters crapping out on you as soon as they do. Rinzler o7o7o7 has a good tutorial on trading.

With all due respect to Rinzler (great videos & tactics), if turning to face and boost past your attacker is going to be part of your tactics... I see no reason not to shove 30 missiles in their face as you pass by. You can still retract your hardpoints after a quick missile launch and hiwake out ASAP. For the record, both of my trade ships have what you mentioned G5 Prismatics, point defense, & MRP plus G5 reactive armour, G5 shield boosters, G5 Dirty Drives (but not that weapon loadout) and when trading escape is my first priority - I just thought it might be fun for a novice combat pilot to test out, and I know how much many real PvPers loathe seekers with TC.

Hello Tatoo,
I was carrying 72t Evacuation shelters for a mission - I know he scanned the cargo, twice*, but would he have been interested in cluttering his hold with those?

No, not for a minute (though I don't normally do PvP so wouldn't really know). I just wanted to confirm that it was in fact you that I killed (hangs head in shame).

Unfortunately the planets aligned in that your mission destination was the same system that currently has a community goal going on. The community goal is one that I don't agree with, so wanted to disrupt deliveries to it.

When I scanned you (twice, cos I had never done it before) I saw 72 tonnes of something, so let rip. Only afterwards did I realise that you were carrying evacuation shelters and that they weren't community goal-related.

So apologies for that!

Here's my ship in case it's of interest:

I wish I had half the graciousness in defeat that you do!

For future reference whatever escape tactic you decide on you can use the 15sec FSD spool up time to send them a quick com msg, 'GG' is a good one, they really appreciate that :)

these weapons are ok for a npc but in such an encounter i would recommend not using them. you won't make a dent anyway and your only goal is to get out of there soon, any time your hardpoints are deployed you're playing with the devil.

also, rinzler's git gud guide is spot on, and mostly still valid, but doesn't account for engineering, particularly special effects, and new weapons. there are some nasty features now that can reduce your survivability somewhat. more reason to get out as fast as you can.

dropping some cargo is a nice touch. however, same thing: if you linger around too much to try to discern the attacker's intentions it may be too late.

and props for both victim and perpetrator for the attitude!

Thanks Metal Angel, that seems to make a lot of sense. I'm not sure I can stretch to a Type 7 built that way (yet), but some of that thinking could go into my Asp X.

Yes and no. More experienced and quicker reacting players may do better with the missiles, slower pilots (i.e. me) will be better off without the option to be tempted into slugging it out.

Thanks Tatoo. I note that neither of us use our game name here ;)
To be fair to you, and your opposition to the CG - the only way I could build the reputation to be offered that mission was by transporting CG stuff into the system, and then switching to take missions from the Orbiter. So, yes, I am guilty of supporting the CG.

In the fight, you were all over me, and weirdly, you never turned red, so I couldn't get a lock to return fire. Not that I could have done any good if I had!

Thanks Gramps. Those timings are useful - to add context, the whole fight lasted 29 seconds from interdiction to death.

znôrt, I fear you are right. I've dealt out to NPCs the same kind of punishment tattoo gave me - or worse (slower). Though I try not to submit to their interdictions, cause some that I come across are better than me (met one of those today too).

You can use the "highest threat" and "next/previous hostile" commands to help with that.
Just know it will lock on to torpedoes and missiles too.

It helps knowing where your aggressor is at all times

This is another great vid:

Thanks Krash. I'll have to work out how to set up that hotkey. FA off - what is 'FA' in this context?

*ED Discovery tels me so ;)

BTW, this is my current set-up: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=B0g3,...rw0B5Y0BNC0Bcg1,,0AA125S14zM405U17Pc02UI12jw1

Controls-> Targeting->target next jump in route
Must be set in the galmap, nav panel doesn't count. I set a route in the galmap whenever I jump into a new system and plan to SC.

FA Flight Assist off/on toggle. This deserves a hot key as well.
