Best settings for GTX 1070 and Vive

Just replaced my 970 with a 1070 and trying to figure out the best settings to use with the Vive. I've tried the settings in mp4x's post (page 64) here:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/247986-HTC-Vive-resolution-and- focus/page64

the key ones being supersampling = 2.0 (through SteamVR), 0.65 (in game), SMAA, and medium Ambient Occlusion

but ended up with quite a few frame drops (he was using a 1080). Tried dropping textures to medium or low and tweaking a few other settings, and the quality was okay, but still getting quite a few frame drops when in stations in menus (particularly the missions menu). Turning off AA seemed to help more, with expected loss of quality (though shouldn't supersampling already be doing AA for me?).

What settings have you guys found that work well with the 1070 and Vive? My processor is getting a little old -- it's a 3570K, but I'm hoping that's not the bottleneck. 16 GB RAM. Anyone tried adjusting supersampling in-game, rather than through SteamVR?

If this has been answered elsewhere, please direct me. I didn't see it in the HTC Vive thread, but then there are 64 pages to that topic.
